I know that the season seems to drift past quickly.  The kid's organic garden is growing with the corn now taller than they are!

Waldorf Inspired Preschool in NE is hosting an Open House

Rising Song is a small Waldorf inspired, home based program in NE Portland opening Fall 2009. We offer a loving, creative environment for children ages 3-5 with the low teacher/child ratio of 1:6. At Rising Song teachers act as facilitators of play offering gentle, nurturing guidance. In our classroom children participate in baking, gardening, painting and handwork. Songs, stories and puppet shows provide rich material for the imagination and teach about the natural world. We celebrate each season with special events for the whole family: A festival of light in the fall, a shadow puppet show in the winter and a maypole dance in the spring.

Planning Ahead

It isn't too late to begin making childcare plans for the fall.  I realize that summer is a great season (and the organic garden the children and I have is looking fantastic) but fall is right around the corner.

I have three openings beginning in September (three students are graduating from our little pre-preschool) creating a wonderful opportunity for some lucky family.  I have a small select group with openings for ages 1 1/2 to four years.  (Families with siblings should take special note of these rare openings.)

Securing your spot now will let you relax even more knowing that you will have set your child down the right path for learning and social development.  Now is the time to set-up an interview for the fall.

Childcare Provider needed for Event

Connect PDX will be organizing a fund raiser for "Friends of the Children" August 5th from 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm.  The event will be located at Friends of the Children's location 44 NE Morris St. Portland, OR 97212.  As part of the event we would like to offer childcare to the attendee's children.  Friends of the Children will have a separate room for the childcare during the event.  The childcare provider will not be responsible for collecting payment from the guests.  They will only be responsible for the children and liability coverage.  I am guessing we will have 10 - 15 children but will not know until RSVP's come back.
 
Questions for interested providers:
 1)  Since this is a fund raiser for "Friends of the Children" and we would love to promote the provider's business by listing them on the invitation and advertise during the event, are they willing to reduce or even provide free care?
 2)  Cost p/hour and for how many children?  I think we should have them scheduled from 5:30 pm - 9:00 pm. 
3)  Liability and Insurance?  Is this provided by them?  Do we need the parents to sign any paperwork when they drop off the children?
 4)  If we find out there are more them expected children a week before the event, can they adjust there numbers and provide more people to care for the children?

Munchkin Manor is a small home based preschool in the Creston-Kenilworth neighborhood (close to Woodstock as well) which currently has openings for children 2 years and older. I realize that you hear this a lot: my daycare is the best, your child will be happy here, yadda, yadda.  But what I do is not only different but unique.  I am small enough (only six children) and select enough (my references after twenty two years in the business speak volumes) that I actually create a family learning environment.

Bridge City Kids, in home childcare in the St. Johns Area of Portland OR

Bridge City Kids is an in home childcare program, is currently accepting full and part time families.

Hours of operation are Monday through Friday, 6am to 6pm. Full time care is offered at $600 per month, per child; part time is offered at $30 per day, per child.

Hi there! I will have 2 openings available in my home as of September 1^st, 2009. I currently care for my daughter and her dear friend who each just turned two. We are looking for some playmates to join us in our fun days to come! I use a gentle, natural approach to their care and create healthy daily rhythms, giving them comfort. Looking for quality infant care in SE and/or close to SW First and Arthur

Hello,

I am looking for quality affordable care in the SE area or around the west side of the Ross Island bridge. My daughter is due May 4th and I will be looking for care starting around the end of June when I have to go back to work.  I have found an in home provider I would love to send my daughter too, but she is not sure if she will have room, so I need to find another option.

I am leery of an in home provider unless it is by referral and they must be registered with the state.  I want someone who promotes attachment parenting, accepts cloth diapers and supports breast feeding as well as has an open door policy which means parents can come by anytime to spend time with their child or breast feed, etc.  (I realize nap time is not a good time to interrupt the daily routine).

If anyone has any recommendations, I would love to hear from you. I have checked out a couple of centers and one I really like, the other not so much not to mention it is way out of my price range.

A true eco-healty childcare in Beaverton needed

I am looking for a true eco-healthy childcare in Beaverton:

organic food, non-toxic cleaners, no pestecides on playground, no microwaving plastics, non-toxic toys (mainly European and US made wooden and cloth toys, avoiding plastic toys), etc.

Feedback about Apple Blossom, Blossom House, or Mother Earth Preschools?

Hello fellow Portland Parents!

I am looking for some feedback from parents (or even former teachers) who have had their children attend one of the following three preschools:

• Apple Blossom Nursery School
• Blossom House Preschool 
• Mother Earth Childcare  

I am considering all three schools for my son and will be visiting them in the next week to form my own opinions, but I would LOVE to hear any firsthand accounts of people who've had their children in one of these schools.  Please email me at hcullom@aol.com with any feedback that you might have, whether positive or negative.

(My son was abused at a daycare about a year ago [despite my valiant efforts to do everything "right" in screening the daycare, questioning parents, showing up unannounced, etc], so I am even more nervous about finding childcare than your average parent.  We've had a wonderful nanny for the past year, but she is leaving us because she needs to spend more time with her three pre-teen and teenage boys.)

I would be EVER grateful for any advice or feedback anyone can give me!

If you'd like to suggest another option, that's great too, but I am a single mama so I need full-time preschool (full days, 4-5 days per week) and can't do co-ops or other schools that only offer half day programs.  If you have any other great ideas, please pass them along too!

As for my general childrearing philosophy, I tend to pull my beliefs from multiple sources, especially attachment parenting and Montessori. I believe in soothing crying babies and have experience with cloth diapers, feeding with breastmilk, and babywearing. For toddlers and older children, I believe in learning while playing, silliness, and redirection if needed. Although I am flexible, I do believe that children thrive with some consistency and structure.  I think that children (and I) do best to get out of the house daily, even if it's just for a walk around the neighborhood.  I love to go on outings to coffee shops (Urban Grind is my new favorite find to take babies and toddlers), OMSI, the Zoo, story time, baby gym, indoor park, etc.

I serve home cooked meals and although I'm not totally organic, I do use all hormone free meats and milk. Infant Childcare

I am starting to research options for infant childcare and was curious about other mama's experiences. I am in NE Portland and am a teacher, lucky enough to not need childcare until August, 2009.  I will have a 7 month old at that time. I have found lists and lists of providers, but am feeling overwhelmed trying to narrow it all down.

Is anyone using a daycare center that takes infants that they love?  Are you using an in-home provider that is amazing? I am the first in my circle to have a kid so would really appreciate any recommendations.

SE Mom seeking 3-day childcare/nanny for sweet 2 1/2 old boy

I have a sweet, active, social guy on my hands who I think could benefit from a more active setting.  We live in Sellwood with access to great parks and the community center. I am in need of part time childcare for my two boys - almost 3 y/o and 5 month old.  Right now, I only need someone to care for them 1x/month for about 2 hours.  It would be on any Tuesday from about 11:30 to 1:30 pm.  I am open to someone coming to our house, going to a center or doing a swap with another family.  There may be a possibility of adding hours in the afternnoon.

Munchkin Manor is a small preschool in the Creston-Kenilworth neighborhood (close to Woodstock as well) and currently has openings for children 1.5 years and older. The daily schedule includes circle time, music, movement, stories, outside activities and craft projects. The curriculum is driven by themes that are geared to children’s natural interests. Many basic preschool skills are covered in our daily routine--including things like counting, literacy (introductory reading and writing skills), and the all-important skill of learning to be part of a community.

There are no more than 6 children on any given day and currently I am the only teacher. I am a licensed elementary teacher (taught 6th grade math and science until starting a family) and have 2 children of my own. I also have varied experience working in preschool settings (montessori, reggio-emilia). I am a certified family child care center which means that I have been checked with the criminal history registry, I am CPR certified, I provide healthy meals and snacks, and I meet all safety and health regulations set by the state.

How can I find a "Mother's" (parent's) Day Out program?

I'm new to the area and I'm wondering if there are any local Mother's Day Out programs?  It is for my 2.5 yo daugther.  I'm not interested in part-time day care, just 2-3 hours once or twice a week.  And, I'd like a group setting, not a babysitter in my home.  I'm aware of the co-op preschool programs and traditional preschool programs (most of which do not begin until age three); these don't really meet our needs at this point either.  I'd be appreciative of any suggestions.

We currently have to leave our childcare provider due to falling victim to our 'economic crisis'. We would love to find someone to take our son's place (I believe they would need a 2-2.5 year old male to replace our spot); since we are obligated to pay for the next 3 months unless a replacement is found.
