Escuela Viva
Community School
Offering a Dual Language Learning Environment
1111 SE Pine St. Portland, OR

Escuela Viva, has 5 openings available in our Preschool classrooms for the 2013-2014 school year.  Escuela Viva was developed with two main goals in mind.  The first is to provide an enriching environment that supports the spiritual, academic and humanistic needs of our children. The second is to support the development of both English and Spanish language skills.

The Learning Process:  Children, at Escuela Viva, are viewed as competent active learners (constructivism). Teachers are but one means by which the children learn. Learning occurs in collaboration between the classroom environment, the adult teachers, parents and the children (Reggio Emilia).

Escuela Viva, founded in 2004, is OPQ (Oregon Program of Quality) certified and is leading the movement to professionalize early childhood education.  Each day our team brings compassion and enthusiasm to the classroom.

Please read more about our educational philosophies and program at Escuela-Viva.com.  You can complete a waitlist application on the 'Enrollment' page of our website, and direct any questions towards info@escuela-viva.com.

PS: We have two Open Houses on July 8th and July 29th at 5:30 p.m, hope to see you there!

New Home Montessori Primary Program in Southeast Portland

April 25, 2013

                      AugustHammering1WalkingTheLineTheGirlsHammering

Merry Montessori is a four year-old home Montessori program in Southeast Portland that specializes in low impact, eco-conscious infant, toddler, and primary programs that support the whole child.  Our trained guides connect children with themselves, their peers and their world by helping them gain skills in independence, socialization and  focus.

We currently have a full infant toddler program and are excited about opening our new Primary Program in fall 2013 for ten children ages 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 and 3 1/2 to 4 1/2 (with previous Montessori experience).  Our new Primary Program will offer a Spanish-English language curriculum and experience, as we believe opening up children's language options opens up their world.

If your child is mostly potty trained and ready to begin school in the fall we will begin offering visits to our new home program May 3rd and will host an open house May 3rd and will have an open house Saturday, June 1st from 9am to 12pm.

~Terrific Part Time/ Full Time Nanny Open at the end of the Month!~

January 06, 2013

GREAT NANNY, JUST FOR YOU!

Hi Everyone,

My name is Jillian M. Currently I am looking for a new position as a Nanny. I was involved in a Nanny-share for almost the duration of the year but as the contract term ended and the children turned 1 they were placed in Montessori. I am comfortable doing either another nanny-share, or working for one family. I am comfortable working with up to 3 infants, depending on their ages, 4 toddlers, or 5 children in total but this would really depend on the overall dynamic of the situation. I am also comfortable doing care in your home, or mine. Ideally the position would provide at least 36 hours a week, but this is also flexable as I explore my options.

Here's a little information about me. I have an immense amount of experience with children. I started my babysitting career at 12 years old, after I received my Oregon babysitters training, and CPR certification. Since then, I have had experience in taking care of about 25 different children, usually two or more at a time (five max), in in-home settings. My experience with children ranges from newborns to 13-year-olds. About half of my clientele has been parents of children diagnosed with Autism. I have also worked and volunteered with a school that caters to meeting the needs of children diagnosed with Autism . My tasks at the school included building a summer reading program for some of the more advanced students. I directed the students during "signing times" videos (videos that teach the children sign language). I did teacher aide duties in the classrooms working extensively with the pre-schoolers, and in the occupational therapy room. In addition to this experience, I was also a camp counselor in high-school at Camp Howard outdoor school for 2 seasons.

I love to do activities with children. I am not the type of care provider who will sit children in front of the TV and do my own thing. Just to be clear, I rather children have no screen time during my time with them. I prefer for children to have fun. If the parent permits, I like to take them on outings to the park, or maybe a day to the zoo, children's museum, library, or swimming pool depending on the child's interest. I love doing art projects, or fun cooking activities, playing board games, and will even happily partake in dress up or tea parties. As well as making sure the children enjoy the time we spend together, I firmly believe in education. I like to come up with developmentally appropriate activities that stimulate the intellectual growth of each child. For school aged children I come in great handy for help with homework.

I am a student and am working towards a degree in early childhood education. I take courses through the local community college's online program, when I transfer next year I will continue primarily with online education. I am familiar with many learning/parenting styles includingMontessori, Waldorf, Attachment Parenting, and Positive Redirection. What I am unfamiliar with, I am willing to learn. My time spent with your children is based on your needs, their needs, and your parenting beliefs. I am very flexiable when it comes to this as I understand it is your child and I enjoy learning new styles.

I have a license, car insurance, and a car for transporting needs. In addition, I know basic Spanish, and am furthering my skills incase you are interested in your child learning a second language.

I would ideally like a position that offers at least a 1 year contract.

Best,
Jillian

Looking for a good spanish immersion preschool

Hey everyone!

I live in the Oregon City area and am having a hard time finding a preschool close by that has a spanish immersion program. My daughter is only 9 months old, but the way I see it its that it's never too early to find a place I like.

I'm not opposed to moving, so I would prefer a general list of spanish bilingual schools in the portland area. Google hasn't been too much help. What grade schools offer these programs?

I like how the International School offer preK-grade school, that way my daughter could build long lasting relationships and myself with the staff. I also like how they offer financial aid options.

Anyway, any help would be great with constructing a list of spanish bilingual schools would be amazing!

Thank you, everyone!

“We consider ourselves extremely lucky to have found this gem of a school.  The location of the school at the edge of the Wildwood Trail gives children ready access to one of Portland’s treasures and is worth our drive.  By the third day of school, my son begged him to drop him off early because he ‘loves love loves my school!’” — Marcelle, Beaverton Mom

Reggio Emilia, Italian Immersion Preschool in NW- Open for Registration

August 02, 2012

Scuola Italiana di Portland is accepting registration for its Reggio Emilia-inspired, Italian Immersion preschool in the Pearl District. The preschool is located in the Zimmerman Community Center at 1542 NW 14th Ave.  The program operates Monday through Wednesday from 8:30 AM to 12:30 PM.  The program is taught by an experienced, native Italian teacher. The school maintains a 4:1 student teacher ratio.  Children must be 3 years old to attend the program.

The preschool is a full immersion program, meaning Italian is spoken from day one.  However, on occasion, the teacher may find it necessary to use English to help a child understand a word or phrase.  At these times, the teacher will use the “sandwich method” – Italian word| English translation| Italian word again -.

Amazing Au Pairs Available

July 20, 2012

Hey mamas,

We have two Au Pairs who are currently in the US but here as Au Pairs that are looking to continue with a host family.

There are many more amazing Au Pairs available as well. If you have a certain language or culture you want your Au Pair to come from let me know and I can send you a few that may work for you.

Right now the two I am trying to find host families for in Portland are Irina and Stacey.

StaceyLM

Stacey is about to turn 19 years old, has three younger brothers ages, 17, 13 & 1 and is from North Lakes, Australia.  Stacey had her own car in Australia and has been driving while participating in the au pair program.

Stacey’s childcare experience includes working in a school setting with children between the ages of 3 months and 12 years old.  She also provided care for a brother and sister aged 5.  She also provided care for her youngest brother.

IrinaIJ

Irina is 19 years old, has an older brother and is from Disentis, Switzerland.  In addition to fluent German and fluent and Rhaeto-Romance Irina speaks strong English as well as basic French.

Irina’s childcare experience includes caring for three siblings over the course of two years.  They were 10, 9 and 5 when Irina started caring for them.  She also cared for a little girl from the time was 4 until she was 6.

Irina’s hobbies include snowboarding, tennis, volleyball and swimming.  She also plays piano and took singing lessons when she was younger.

Stacey and Irina are participating in the State Department Au Pair program. The State Department created the program in 1987 as a childcare option and cultural exchange experience for American families. We have been participating in the program since 1989 and have placed over 80,000 au pairs with American Families. Please contact me for more information about either Au Pair or the au pair program.

A little about me, I am a local mom here in pdx and I am passionate about attachment parenting, the environment and creativity. I work with an amazing Au Pair program and I believe it fits well with so many Portland families. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions or are interested or pass my name and info along! Cheers!

What our families have to say about us:

"I'm writing this email to thank Brigit's teachers for being so sweet to her while she attended Grandma's place, particularly, Stephanie. She still talks about her everyday and says how much she loves her and frequently carries the card around that she made her. Today she yelled at her dad with the card in her hand "don't ever throw this away, it would make me cry, Stephanie is the best and she made this for me!" and I just about cried! I had a rough time in every childcare center my mom put me in growing up and to know Brigit was so happy when I was away from her makes me feel so good. We will be going to Europe for the summer! And before I started preparing for that, I wanted to be sure to thank you all. Thanks again to everyone for your kindness to my little one, she's had such good (and hilarious) things to say about her experience and grandma's place!"

"I am SO happy with the care and attention my child receives at your facility that I am willing to commute out of my way to get her there, even though there is a daycare across the street from our apartment. Keep up the spectacular work!"

"It's very close to my house, and when I came for a tour, I was pleased to hear about the educational focus--it's not just babysitting, but my child will learn all kinds of skills--social and academic. I also liked that the director was willing to spend so much time showing me around and answering my questions during my tour."

Experienced Caregiver Offering Babysitting

May 14, 2012

Hi, everyone!  I'm expecting my first child in September, and would like to try to save up some money for the first six weeks of baby's life.  So I'm offering occasional babysitting in order to supplement the income I already earn from working.  I currently work at a couple childcare centers, but neither of them full-time, so maternity leave is not a benefit I would receive.

I have experience helping friends and family with their children from ages birth to 6 (for about 8 years, combined).  I also have been working for licensed childcare centers for about four years, combined.  That has been with ages 0 - 5 years.

I have CPR/First Aid certification, Food Handler's card, and some Domestic Violence Advocacy Training.  I also am registered in the Oregon Registry.

My rate for babysitting would be $10 an hour, and I'm comfortable with up to three kids at a time.

If you're interested and need a caregiver, I'd be more than happy to talk further and answer any questions, provide references, etc.  Thanks, everybody!  Have a nice day!

Nanny looking for part time family (TUES/THURS)

May 09, 2012

Hi families!

I am a 25 year old female with a Bachelor's degree looking to nanny for a family part time. I have previous childcare experience at a summer camp, in a classroom and worked with children in a foreign country. I have been a nanny for infants, toddlers, and school age children. I also have experience with children with disabilities. I am currently working for a family with multiples, Monday, Wednesday and Friday. I am looking to a family to fit the other days (Tuesday/ Thursday) with 8-12 hours shifts of providing care each day . I am taking my time to find a good match so if you have any questions let's chat.

I love working with kids- teaching through play, outings, and interaction. I am familiar with all children's facilities in Portland. This includes Community Centers, Libraries, Parks, Playdate PDX, Children's Museum, the Zoo, Playground Gym, Milagros Boutique music times,OMSI, JJump and Indoor Parks. I love visiting these places to help children learn, grow, and develop while being challenged and exposed to this fun filled world. My approach with children comes from a place of love, care and understanding. Light housework like cooking, dishes, laundry, sweeping and organizing are things I am happy to also do. I am CPR and First Aid Certified , drive a new reliable car, and have two new toddler Graco car seats and a booster.

If you feel we could be a good match feel free to email me with any questions. I would also be glad to send my resume with references. Thanks!

Common Au Pair Myths by USAuPair

May 08, 2012

Au pair with boy in yard

Before discussing common myths, below is a brief explanation about au pairs.

Au pairs are a child care alternative for families who want:

  • In-home child care
  • Bi-lingual child care
  • Flexible child care
  • Quality child care
  • Intercultural child care
  • Affordable child care

Au pairs are young adults from foreign countries participating in a cultural exchange program. They live with American host families for one year or longer.  In exchange for room, board and a weekly wage of $195.75, au pairs provide up to 45 hours of flexible child care weekly, up to 10 hours daily.  Agency program fees cover screening, travel fare to the U.S., medical insurance for one year, background checks, au pair attendance at 3.5 day workshop on child development and safety, and much more.

Common Myths

  1. Au Pairs don't speak English - Au pairs must have a conversational level of English. USAuPair au pairs take an English exam and score at a pre-intermediate level.  USAuPair measures grammar, vocabulary, reading comprehension and written expression.  Au pairs may need assistance with verbal comprehension.
  2. We lose our privacy - Au pairs take classes, make friends and develop a healthy social network.  As one experienced family once said, "Au pairs are not peeking around corners watching you. When off duty, they are engaged with their friends and activities."
  3. Au pairs need a private bathroom - Au pairs may share a bathroom.
  4. All au pairs smoke - Not all au pairs smoke.  USAuPair au pairs sign a no-smoking contract.
  5. Au pairs are expensive - At an average weekly cost between $310 to $320 per family, not per child, au pairs are an affordable child care alternative.  This average weekly cost includes USAuPair's program fee.
  6. Au pairs don't drive - USAuPair au pairs have a minimum of six months driving experience. Driving varies greatly among countries.  Individual driving habits vary greatly among au pairs - from extreme overconfidence to extreme careful.
  7. Au pairs want to party, not care for children - Young adults need a healthy social life. USAuPair's Au Pair Code of Conduct establishes au pair behavior guidelines.  USAuPair's Handbook and Guide covers many topics and helpful tips for families and au pairs.
  8. Families who rent cannot have au pairs - Families who rent may host au pairs.  However, au pairs must have a private bedroom.
  9. Housekeeping is not allowed - Au pairs may perform light housekeeping tasks related to the children in their care.  This includes laundering childrens clothes, tidying their rooms, cleaning up spills, preparing their meals, changing their bed linens, grocery shopping.
  10. Single parents cannot host au pairs - Sngle parent families may host au pairs.

The au pair program is an enriching cultural exchange program for families and au pairs.  Au pairs learn about American culture by living with an American host family.  Host family children learn about other countries, cultures and languages.   Sshuttle

USAuPair au pairs arrive in Portland for their 3.5 day workshop.  Portland area families pick up their au pairs at a local hotel upon workshop completion.
