Best way to find infant care options in/near SE?

January 27, 2013

Hi UrbanMamas!

We moved to Portland recently for my husband's job, and there must be something in the water, because we're already expecting our first child - a baby boy - in June 2013!

As per instructions from almost everyone I know, we're already starting to look into infant care options for when I go back to work full time in September 2013.  We've gotten a few recommendations from my still measly social networks here but mainly we're relying on internet research which seems to be turning up the same few options: ChildRoots, Creative Minds, Grandma's Place, Belmont Academy, CCLC, the OHSU CCLC (we're looking in/near SE).  Or find a nanny.

I figure this can't be all that's out there or 90% of the babies in SE Portland wouldn't have a place to go.  My prenatal yoga instructor says many places just don't have websites.  Does anyone have ideas - specific places or lists of places?  A nanny or nanny share would also be an option.  I work from home and have a fairly flexible schedule, so I don't necessarily need a full-time, 9-6 deal.  On the other hand I've been told not to expect to get any work done if I'm home with the baby, even if there's a nanny there too.  And I do travel for work from time to time, and my husband has VERY long and VERY inflexible hours (he's a resident at OHSU).

Would love to hear from anyone with experience or ideas!  Places you or your friends have sent your babies, lists you've received, other networks you think I should tap into?  Mamas who work from home, any creative ways you've made it work?  Nanny+coworking space?  Would love to hear any and all input!

Thanks SO much,

Beth Stucky (bethstucky1@gmail.com) - that's a number 1 in my email address

~Terrific Part Time/ Full Time Nanny Open at the end of the Month!~

January 06, 2013

GREAT NANNY, JUST FOR YOU!

Hi Everyone,

My name is Jillian M. Currently I am looking for a new position as a Nanny. I was involved in a Nanny-share for almost the duration of the year but as the contract term ended and the children turned 1 they were placed in Montessori. I am comfortable doing either another nanny-share, or working for one family. I am comfortable working with up to 3 infants, depending on their ages, 4 toddlers, or 5 children in total but this would really depend on the overall dynamic of the situation. I am also comfortable doing care in your home, or mine. Ideally the position would provide at least 36 hours a week, but this is also flexable as I explore my options.

Here's a little information about me. I have an immense amount of experience with children. I started my babysitting career at 12 years old, after I received my Oregon babysitters training, and CPR certification. Since then, I have had experience in taking care of about 25 different children, usually two or more at a time (five max), in in-home settings. My experience with children ranges from newborns to 13-year-olds. About half of my clientele has been parents of children diagnosed with Autism. I have also worked and volunteered with a school that caters to meeting the needs of children diagnosed with Autism . My tasks at the school included building a summer reading program for some of the more advanced students. I directed the students during "signing times" videos (videos that teach the children sign language). I did teacher aide duties in the classrooms working extensively with the pre-schoolers, and in the occupational therapy room. In addition to this experience, I was also a camp counselor in high-school at Camp Howard outdoor school for 2 seasons.

I love to do activities with children. I am not the type of care provider who will sit children in front of the TV and do my own thing. Just to be clear, I rather children have no screen time during my time with them. I prefer for children to have fun. If the parent permits, I like to take them on outings to the park, or maybe a day to the zoo, children's museum, library, or swimming pool depending on the child's interest. I love doing art projects, or fun cooking activities, playing board games, and will even happily partake in dress up or tea parties. As well as making sure the children enjoy the time we spend together, I firmly believe in education. I like to come up with developmentally appropriate activities that stimulate the intellectual growth of each child. For school aged children I come in great handy for help with homework.

I am a student and am working towards a degree in early childhood education. I take courses through the local community college's online program, when I transfer next year I will continue primarily with online education. I am familiar with many learning/parenting styles includingMontessori, Waldorf, Attachment Parenting, and Positive Redirection. What I am unfamiliar with, I am willing to learn. My time spent with your children is based on your needs, their needs, and your parenting beliefs. I am very flexiable when it comes to this as I understand it is your child and I enjoy learning new styles.

I have a license, car insurance, and a car for transporting needs. In addition, I know basic Spanish, and am furthering my skills incase you are interested in your child learning a second language.

I would ideally like a position that offers at least a 1 year contract.

Best,
Jillian

Our Amazing Nanny Is Available Part Time

August 17, 2012

We have a fabulous nanny. She has been with us since our almost 4 year old daughter was 4 months old, and now need to cut back her hours due to preschool. She has been amazing every step of the way, and we wanted to write her this letter of reference to ease her search for an amazing family. We are hoping to keep her with us part time, as she is now one of daughter's best friends. She is magic with infants, and could get my daughter to sleep way more than I ever could. She was adept in all my family's needs; cloth diapers, frozen breast milk, dietary restrictions, and anything we asked of her. As my daughter grew she always was seeking out age appropriate activities. She would search for classes at the community center to attend during her hours, and always taking our daughter to the playground. She takes my daughter all over to places like OMSI, children's museum, the zoo, playdate pdx, and swimming. She is energetic, bubbly, and fantastic with children. She is dependable and always on time. Please contact us via email with any additional questions you may have and we will be happy to call or email you back. For all other non-reference questions, please contact her directly. She has written some information about herself and contact information below. Thank you!
Mindy and Jeremy Stone
mindyfagerstrom@hotmail.com

Here is some information from our nanny:
I am seeking a part-time nanny position in order to supplement my current nanny position. I have been working with my current family for more than 3 years, but now that their daughter is in preschool, my hours have been reduced. I am available:
Tuesdays (any time)
Thursdays (til approx. 4 pm)
Friday (any time)
Some Saturdays & Sundays
I am seeking a minimum of 10 hours a week. With some advance notice, I am also available for date nights and other babysitting jobs.

I think that children (and I) do best to get out of the house daily, even if it's just for a walk around the neighborhood. I'm very pro-active about finding things to do and places to go, such as the library, various story times, kid's musical events, playgrounds/parks, Play Date PDX, the Zoo, etc. Portland's such a family friendly place and there's always tons of activities indoors and out, whatever the weather, and I like to take advantage of that.

I am college educated, but plan to nanny for approximately the next 2 years. I have a clear criminal background history. I have taken infant and child CPR and 1st Aid, but my certification needs to be renewed, which I plan on doing asap. I am a non-smoker and have no pet allergies.

As for my general childrearing philosophy, I am very flexible, but tend to pull my beliefs from multiple sources, especially attachment parenting and Montessori. (Since every family and child is different, I don't believe that any one philosophy is "one size fits all.") I believe in soothing crying babies and being interactive with them, and have experience with cloth diapers, feeding with breastmilk, and babywearing. For toddlers and older children, I believe in learning while playing, silliness, and redirection if needed. Although I am flexible, I do believe that children thrive with some consistency and structure.

One of the most important things for me is to have a good fit and partnership with the families that I work with. Please contact me via email or phone if you have any questions or would like to discuss things further. I would greatly appreciate if you would include some information about your family, child care needs, etc.

Thank you!

warm, flexible, creative, patient, silly, capable, experienced toddler caregiver/nanny/regular sitter needed ASAP

Hi my family is looking for someone with experience and a passion for working with young children to care for our bright, funny, active, precocious, snuggly, adventurous 17 month old girl. Mom is an educator/teacher/academic/writer who has worked across the age and theory spectrum and has a passion for Reggio Emilia, play based and expereintial  learning. I see children as partners in research and experience as well as learning. Since my daughter was born I've been able to learn with and from her and I'd love to find someone who has a background in Reggio or any of the other educational practices I've mentioned.

Dad works in computer programming from our home office and Grandma (who is a retired educator) live in our in law apartment.

We are looking for someone to give Dad and Grandma a break during the week while I (Mom) will be recuperating from major orthopedic surgery. Hours would be about 15-20 hours a week over the course of 3 weekday mornings (Wednesdays are essential but everything else is open for discussion.) Hours would ideally be something along the lines of 8 or 9 am to 1 or 2 pm.  Primarily we are looking for someone to do the things that I usually do with my active, creative little girl and won't be able to for several months. Trips to the parks near our close in SE home (less than 2 blocks from Kennilworth park, the zoo, OMSI, the children's museum, Mount Scott Community pool (we have membership cards for all of these places), trips to Cafe Au Play, Storytimes, kids music, outdoor adventures and of course just playing and being silly at home.

Because I have no idea what my recovery will look like this is a long term temporary position, somewhere between 4 and 10 months, most likely. This would make a great part time job for a child development student, mom (feel free to bring your toddler or young child), or childcare provider with an afternoon part time position.

Please be over 21 and have at least 5 years varifiable experience. Current infant/child CPR and OCH registration as well as fantastic references would be a HUGE advantage. Please have your own transportaion, insurance and clean driving record or be comfortable using public transportation.

Your primary job will be to take care of our daughter so it would be great if you were comfortable doing projects, helping her clean up, preparing simple kid friendly meals and snacks. We are not looking for a houskeeper, we would love someone who enjoys spending time with our daughter and wants to be included in our close knit family.

Thank you for reading. Please contact Aviva at: aviva@eberlin.net or (503) 528 4833 if this sounds like a good fit for you.

All the best,

Aviva

Amazing Au Pairs Available

July 20, 2012

Hey mamas,

We have two Au Pairs who are currently in the US but here as Au Pairs that are looking to continue with a host family.

There are many more amazing Au Pairs available as well. If you have a certain language or culture you want your Au Pair to come from let me know and I can send you a few that may work for you.

Right now the two I am trying to find host families for in Portland are Irina and Stacey.

StaceyLM

Stacey is about to turn 19 years old, has three younger brothers ages, 17, 13 & 1 and is from North Lakes, Australia.  Stacey had her own car in Australia and has been driving while participating in the au pair program.

Stacey’s childcare experience includes working in a school setting with children between the ages of 3 months and 12 years old.  She also provided care for a brother and sister aged 5.  She also provided care for her youngest brother.

IrinaIJ

Irina is 19 years old, has an older brother and is from Disentis, Switzerland.  In addition to fluent German and fluent and Rhaeto-Romance Irina speaks strong English as well as basic French.

Irina’s childcare experience includes caring for three siblings over the course of two years.  They were 10, 9 and 5 when Irina started caring for them.  She also cared for a little girl from the time was 4 until she was 6.

Irina’s hobbies include snowboarding, tennis, volleyball and swimming.  She also plays piano and took singing lessons when she was younger.

Stacey and Irina are participating in the State Department Au Pair program. The State Department created the program in 1987 as a childcare option and cultural exchange experience for American families. We have been participating in the program since 1989 and have placed over 80,000 au pairs with American Families. Please contact me for more information about either Au Pair or the au pair program.

A little about me, I am a local mom here in pdx and I am passionate about attachment parenting, the environment and creativity. I work with an amazing Au Pair program and I believe it fits well with so many Portland families. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions or are interested or pass my name and info along! Cheers!

Infant/Toddler nanny seeking new family in inner pdx

June 30, 2012

Hello future families,

My name is Wendy and I have been working in the child care industry for the past 4 years.   I am a compassionate, patient, hard working, individual seeking a laid back, loving, and friendly family to work for.   I have passed a National background check and Oregon’s background check for child care workers.  I am CPR/First Aid certified, have some basic knowledge of ASL (American Sign Language), and have obtained 400+ hours in Early Childhood Education. There for I am confident that I have the experience and the qualifications that you are seeking in a caregiver.

I have been working in the child care industry for the past 4 years; however, I have over 10 years experience caring for children, including raising a step son.  Most of my experience is with wobblers and toddlers (1-3 year olds) as this is my favorite age group.  I do however; have experience with children of all ages. I have cared for children on a one-on-one basis and in a group setting.   I am a mature individual seeking a long term position; whether it is occasional, part-time, or a fulltime position.

I am a very fun loving and active nanny.  I believe that children, especially babies, are learning and absorbing things all the time.  I enjoy fostering this learning and natural curiosity by stimulating them with fun and educational activities.   I enjoy taking them on walks, setting up play dates, taking them to any classes that you might have them signed up in, and other age appropriate outings.

I am pet friendly, have experience with expressed milk and cloth diapers.   When the time comes I also have experience with potty-training.   I believe in little to no television, I make sure that all schedules are followed, (within reason) I encourage verbal skills by talking and reading to the children, and I try to get out of the house at least once a day.

My rate generally starts at $12/hr and goes up from there (dependent on job duties and number of children in care).   However, I am flexible and willing to negotiate.   I have a resume, references, and many more details to give.  Please contact me at pwhobear@gmail.com, at your earliest convenience.

 Thank you,

Wendy

Summer Nanny Available

June 21, 2012

Hello Portland Parents!

I have over 7 years experience working with children as a nanny and teacher's assistant. I am a female in my early 30s and have experience being a nanny for over four years and have worked at several elementary schools and preschools as a teacher's assistant, as well as a Waldorf inspired preschool where we did arts and crafts, circle time and songs, stories and puppet plays. I have lived in Portland for two years now and simply love it! I also have over a year of Waldorf training and have attended an Early Childhood Waldorf Conference.

I have experience with all ages of children and especially love to spend time outdoors with them. My passions and skills include: gardening, cooking wholesome food, singing, telling stories, arts and crafts, exploring nature, games, and laughing (all the good things in life).

I love spending my days with children as we go on outings to the library/museum/park (The library is one of my favorite places as I love to read and tell stories to children), explore nature, read, sing, dance, create art, and do pretend play. I feel passionately about children being in an environment in which they are treated with respect, gentleness, and love at all times.

I am very familair with Waldorf philosophy and I try to use these methods when working with children. As a childcare provider I believe in educating the whole child through art, music and creative play. I am always actively engaged with children and challenging them to think for themselves as well.I hope that I can help to instill in your child a love of learning and help your child to see the world as a interesting and good place to live in.

I have a valid drivers license, reliable car with car insurance, CPR trained and have done a criminal history backround check. I have excellent references and will send you my resume upon request. I charge $12.00 hr. Please respond with a little info about yourself and your children and what days/hours you need. I am looking to work at least 15-20+ hours per week and am available days or   evenings with flexibility for date nights, sleep overs and occasional weekends. I look forward to meeting you, have a great day!!

What our families have to say about us:

"I'm writing this email to thank Brigit's teachers for being so sweet to her while she attended Grandma's place, particularly, Stephanie. She still talks about her everyday and says how much she loves her and frequently carries the card around that she made her. Today she yelled at her dad with the card in her hand "don't ever throw this away, it would make me cry, Stephanie is the best and she made this for me!" and I just about cried! I had a rough time in every childcare center my mom put me in growing up and to know Brigit was so happy when I was away from her makes me feel so good. We will be going to Europe for the summer! And before I started preparing for that, I wanted to be sure to thank you all. Thanks again to everyone for your kindness to my little one, she's had such good (and hilarious) things to say about her experience and grandma's place!"

"I am SO happy with the care and attention my child receives at your facility that I am willing to commute out of my way to get her there, even though there is a daycare across the street from our apartment. Keep up the spectacular work!"

"It's very close to my house, and when I came for a tour, I was pleased to hear about the educational focus--it's not just babysitting, but my child will learn all kinds of skills--social and academic. I also liked that the director was willing to spend so much time showing me around and answering my questions during my tour."

Mom offering part time care

May 07, 2012

Hi,

I'm a mom to a 3.5 year old and a 10 year old.  I'm also a student at PSU working towards my MSW (social work) and have a DHS background check, child welfare experience, etc.  I'm looking to provide part time care to a child near my daughter's age (2-5ish) this summer (or even now!).   I'm open to varied situations or hours, but would like to do care in my home.  I'm up for evenings (including date night!), weekends, overnights, or day hours.  I can be flexible on pay depending on the situation but $5 per hour or $30 per day is what I was thinking.   In addition, although once school starts up again I won't be available during weekday days, I will continue to be available on weekends and evenings after the summer, if you're looking for someone long term for drop in care.

Generally we spend our days playing at the school/park next door, going to water play areas, library programs and things like that.  I live close in NE, not far from downtown.  We usually take the bus places or walk.

If interested in talking more email me at jc97210@gmail.com

Thanks!

Looking for an affordable loving nanny?

Hello. I am a 25 year old mother, and part time student looking for a family in need of a part time nanny.  My family and I just moved, so I lost my job as a nanny, where I was caring for another child along with my own, within my own home. Now I’m looking for a part time child to care for outside the home, where I can potentially bring my own 2 year old daughter with me.

I am highly qualified to be your nanny. Before having my own daughter, I was employed at CCLC “Children’s creative learning center”, as a full time toddler teacher. Before that, I was employed at A Childs Kingdom working mainly with toddlers, and infants. I have worked part time in a few other licensed child care centers, and I’ve been employed as a nanny for two different families. Over all, I have nine years working with children and I love doing it.

I contain an abundant of skills including empathy, energy, communication, listening, playfulness, creativity, organization, multi-tasking etc.

If I sound like I could be a good fit for your childcare needs, please feel free to email me at:

I look forward to hearing from you!

Infant/Toddler nanny seeking new family in inner pdx

March 25, 2012

Thank you,

Wendy

Experienced Summer Nanny Available! Outstanding References!

March 21, 2012

Hi Urban Mamas!

I'm an experienced nanny/babysitter looking for a family for the coming summer!  I have been babysitting for ten years, providing afterschool, summer, and date-night care.  I have been blessed to serve as a nanny to several phenomenal families with typically developing children.  Additionally, I’ve had the privilege of working in several contexts with people who have disabilities.  Part of my experience with the latter includes having worked 5 summers at a camp for children and adults who have cognitive/developmental disabilities.  This job cultivated in me creativity, patience, and an impressive repertoire of camp songs!

I will be available in the Gresham area from June 25th-August 10th.  I would love to hear from you and pass along some great references if you think I may be the right fit for your family!  Please contact me at cglayden@gmail.com.

Seeking another family for SE nanny-share

March 02, 2012

We are a family living in the Woodstock neighborhood in southeast portland. Our daughter turned two in December and we are looking for another family with 1-2 other children (preferably two-years-old and up) to form a nanny share through May.

OUR HOME: We are planning to provide the care in our home, which is a single level unit in a triplex on a dead-end street. We have a shared front lawn area and a private small back patio with a raised garden bed in which we will be growing food. We live about 7 blocks to Wookstock Library and walking distance to a couple parks.

OUR VALUES: We find routines and daily rhythms very helpful. We eat meals and have rest-time at the same time everyday. We also value our daughter learning how to do things for herself and helping around the house (e.g. getting dressed, using the potty, cleaning up when she spills, bringing her plate to the dishwasher, etc...) We do our best to be aware of children's capabilities, be patient and allow them the time they need to practice these new skills rather than doing things for them.

FRESH AIR: We value daily outside time.

DIET: Healthy diet is very important to us. We use very little pre-processed foods. Most meals are made with fresh/unprocessed ingredients, and we always look at ingredients when choosing healthy processed foods. We can accommodate different diets. We eat very little gluten and can accommodate vegetarian and vegan diets if needed.

OUR NANNY: We have a wonderful nanny right now who is working for us Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays. She is available on other days if you have further/different childcare needs. She babysat for us for during the past two years and we recently hired her as a part-time nanny.  She is very dependable, honest, caring, patient, expressive, a great communicator, playful, positive attitude, professional and a great cook. She is 22, and has B.S. degree from PSU in Communication, minor in Women's Studies.  She has been taking care of children of all ages for the past 10 years (infant to pre-teen); Other professional youth experience includes teaching english for middle-schoolers in South Korea (summer 2010) and mentoring youth in the "Lunch Buddy Program" for one year.  She also has extensive experience and interest in gardening, yoga, self-care and health.  Some of her favorite activities to do with children are reading, playing, dancing, drawing, cooking, going for walks (park, library, etc), yoga, and listening.

 TIME COMMITMENT:

Our childcare needs will be changing in the summer, and are uncertain right now. So we have only committed to employing her until the summer. She is open to the possibility of continuing care for the second family if it's a good fit.

If this sounds interesting to you and/or you have questions, I'd love to talk with you.
