Nanny and/or Nanny Share Available, Tabor Area

I'm going to part time January 4th (7am to 12pm), which means our terrific nanny is looking for additional afternoon hours (1pm and on) and all day Friday.  Or, if you live in the Tabor area, have a toddler (1 to 1 1/2) and need a nanny full-time, we could nanny share until 12:30pm M-Th and then the remainder you would have the nanny just for you.

Our nanny is loving, patient, and offers a wonderful educational environment. Our daughter loves her and so do we!  Email tabor_mama@yahoo.com.

Your Child and Television: A Provider's Thoughts

The recent report from the American Pediatric Association was just the type of sensational news story that grabs your attention.  It has all of the elements: children, particularly young ones, television, and a host of potentially bad consequences such as obesity, language delay, inactivity, aggression and a whole host of other not-so-pleasant side effects.

The report, which can be downloaded for free, offers what is believed to be the first look at your child’s exposure to television in a childcare situation. It should also be noted that television has been a hot topic for this group probably since its invention.  And with good reason.  It has been cited as the reason children are not what they should be, why their health is not as good as it was just a generation ago (even though I recall spending some serious time in front of a T.V. when I was young, even if I was only used as the flesh and bones remote for my parents).  But is television the blame for what this journal suggests? I think not and implement it daily in my program.

When I first heard about the topic, I was at first curious how, if television was used as an education tool, something your child will encounter during every step of their formative and educational years in increasing frequency, it could be bad.  Several years back, the topic of television was tackled by a book called “G is for Growing” by Shalom M. Fisch and  Rosemarie T. Truglio.  The basis for this book was Sesame Street and the thirty years it has been present in our child’s life. This is a program we all grew up on and could stand to learn from.

The research offered surveys from large groups of children across numerous income and ethnic backgrounds. We treats all of us to the same feeling since we are different ethnic groups.  What this analysis uncovered offered advantages to lower income children in particular and no real detriment to kids from higher income groups.  Much of the research suggested that the more interaction a parent(s) has with their children, the better the opportunity the child had at overall development in both health and mental acuity. (As a disclaimer, I don’t include Sesame Street in my educational programming leaving that fine PBS  program as an option for your home use that I highly recommend.)

And therein lies the rub.  How much interaction that occurs after the child returns home from childcare is far more important to a child’s development than the use of television as an educational tool during the day.  What these pediatricians studied was the combined effect of what happened during the day and what happened when the child returned home.  Added together and you have red flags flying everywhere.

Television at home is almost a necessity. Even if it is part of the child’s education, parents use it to babysit their child while they prepare dinner, check email or Twit a friend on Facebook.  And now that they know their child might be learning through the use of television in the childcare situation, something has to give. Why not plug 'em in and take a few minutes to yourself?

I do three things which you should consider when exploring the possibility of filling the one spot I have open: #1- television delivers some incredibly important lessons, via selected programs and instructional videos. The repetition of songs and dances, rhymes and exercises offer your child a focal point, which has proven to increase attention span.  Sesame Street was once thought to decrease attention spans with its quick editing but later research determined that it actually did more good than harm.

The second thing: the children are not exposed to commercials.  This is by far the most detrimental influence on our children.  While the programming the child watches in your care or mine should always be of the highest quality, what is sandwiched in between those efforts often falls outside the standards we set for our children.

The last item: there is little likelihood (and certainly none in my childcare) where your child will accidentally be exposed to the news or any programming designed for older age groups. I turn on videos and change the channel at lightening speed, I can assure you.

As learning tool, driven by the right content, television delivers like no other. In limited quantities (less than two hours a day, spread out over eight to ten hours), television offers a chance to be a kid while being educated in the process.  Add interaction with other kids, art projects, the chance to learn with educational toys and simply time to be young and your child will be well on their way to a healthy adulthood. Stand by your television and be proud! Myself and my family was raised on televisions and so should you and our future generations. Leave it to the professionals on the television!

That said, if you add your use of television with that of your childcare provider, your child might be watching too much.  But before you isolate your child from the education you child needs as a group, it might be better to ask yourself how you use television at home.

________

I do still have a fulltime opening for a child aged 2-4 years old.  S/he will receive all of the services you are looking for in a small, in-home group.  If you are interested in a close-in PDX location, peace of mind knowing your child is in the best situation for both of you, drop me a note. I recommend television viewing and stand beside it!

Bonni's Funtastic Daycare

htttp://funtasticdaycare.com

We are two families, old friends, looking for a full-time, experienced, loving nanny for our three children (10-month girl and her 3.5-year brother, and an 18-month boy). Parents are three teachers and a builder. Our homes are clean and calm. No televisions. We like to ride our bikes and go on adventures out in the world. Generally speaking, the children are all super sleepers and eaters and are stable, resilient, curious, and happy.
Both families live in close-in NE Portland, in Eliot neighborhood, and are looking for an energetic and creative person who has experience caring for babies and small kids. We hope to find someone who will support healthy diets, engaging activities, and help maintain a safe and clean environment. The position entails some housekeeping tasks--laundry, food prep, clean-up, etc. Both babies are in cloth diapers and eat homemade foods. We will ask for personal and professional references and current CPR and First Aid certification.
The schedule is 37 hours per week: four full days and one short day.

Compensation is $2170/month with paid holidays and sick days. We would love to hire a nanny as soon as possible, but are hoping to make a decision by mid-December with some training days around the holiday time and a start date toward the end of the month.

If this looks like a promising fit, please write us at your earliest convenience with your resume. Thanks very much.

In home childcare in N. Portland

Hi,

I am a stay at home mom that has an outgoing and fun two year old son.  I am wanting to watch another toddler around my son's age a few days a week.  We try to get out each day for walks and bike rides.  It is so important to get the little ones outdoors and doing activities.  We go either to Grant or Irving Parks and make an effort to go to the Albina library for story time each week.  I am a very loving person that enjoys reading, singing, and just being silly with kids.  I am home because I could not find a contract teaching job this year and now I am wanting to make some money to make ends meet while I am home.  I can give references if needed.  We live in N. Portland near Russell St. and Vancouver St.

I look forward in hearing from you.  My name is Molly and my email is:  mollyjhylton@gmail.com

My partner and I are looking for a loving, caring and experienced nanny to care for our daughter starting in March, at which time she will be six months old. We will need care from March through June, though we are interested in continuing contact beyond that. The schedule will be approximately 8:00 a.m. until 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. We live in NE Portland near Alberta and Peninsula Parks. Please contact us if you are interested, mwfoulk2002@yahoo.com. Many thanks!

Looking for Part-time Nanny in North Portland

Hello! I'm looking for a part-time nanny for my son, who is 15 months old, starting as soon as possible, on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 9am-7pm. I am a nurse at Emanuel hospital and work 3 days a week. My husband is a full-time grad student at PSU. Up until now, my husband was watching my son on the days that I work, but recently his workload has severely increased. I am looking for someone with experience in childcare, a resume, and good references. I live close to shopping, Peninsula Park Community Center, and the freeway. We do have a dog, but my son is the priority....lol. They all like going on walks, even in the rain, going to the community center for play group, and going to the library for story times. If this sounds like a good fit, please email me at breeins@gmail.com. Thank you for reading!

Mothers Helper/ Part-time Nanny needs a home!

Hello Families,

My name is Courtney Allen, I am 19 years old 20 in June, and currently going to Portland State University.

I am a Sophomore Theater Arts Major with a minor in Education. I want to become an Art Teacher of sorts!

I am looking for a family for part-time work three days a week and Sat. Sun. if needed.

I am currently with a Wonderful Family but they are working less and less so I am loosing hours that I have free and open to Nanny, so I am looking for another family to Nanny with schedules that are coherent.

I have been involved in childcare for 6 years, and a Nanny for 1 year.

I grew up teaching Theater and Dance classes in Olympia, WA and last year taught a Theater and Art class to kids ages 3-12 at the MLC Sun School in NW Portland. I also was the Senior Group leader at the MJCC this summer and had a class of  toddlers ages 3-7.

I love to teach and be active in kids lives, I think it's one of the most important and worthwhile jobs a person can give. I see Nannying as a time to gain confidence and understanding for my teaching years, while meeting wonderful families and children here in Portland.

I would love to be a more permeant stay and possibly be with my family for as long as possible.

I am able to work full time in this summer starting the second week of June.

Here is my Schedule:

M, W, and F morning whenever you need me until 5pm.

Except: Fridays I can stay as long as needed.

I am willing to do overnights as well so I am free ALL DAY Sat. too if you need me on weekends.

I am free this December to do lots of Nannying as well so I can start asap!

I am CPR and First aid trained and certified and I have a valid drivers license, with a good record.

I do not have a car but I am very bus savvy so I can get myself there and home.

I would just need Transportation for the job if needed for errands and school taking and picking up.

Please let me know your thoughts and questions.

I can send you my Resume and current families number if you want to chat with them!

Email me at, courtneycma@gmail.com if you have further questions or are interested we can communicate further then!

Thank you so and Best wishes,

Courtney Allen

ne families lets build community!

for a long time i have been wanting to build a community of families that do child care exchange. potlucks, carpooling, free schooling/un-schooling support groups, community gardening, grocery exchange and more.  i  know it is so important to have support and love from a community of friends when raising a child. it is not an easy task and not one that anyone should do alone.  i feel it is about time that we come together and start supporting one another. childcare is outrageous the school systems are failing us and lets face it we all need someone to give us a hug here and there. if anyone out there is interested in  getting together for playgroups, trading childcare, staring a homeschooling collective then lets get together! for now
here is a list of events and happenings that happen and resources for families in the inner NE/N/E ( becasue that is where i live and if i included all of Portland it would be an endless list) and close biking/busing distance from there. FEEL FREE TO ADD THINGS as long as they are ongoing for that day  and have fun!

Mildly Jew-flavored preschool/playgroup in SE?

My oldest son is 2 and I'm starting to think about preschool. I like the idea of a preschool with some kind of Jewish cultural theme, heavy on the food, music, holiday traditions, language, history, and culture, and light on the god stuff.

I know there are two or three jewish preschools in SW, but I live in SE don't have a car, and am not interested in spending 1.5 hrs each way on public transportation for the next 3 years. I'm also not sure I need the formality and the possibly-more-focused-on-religion-than-i'd-prefer curriculum.

So my first question is, does something like this already exist in SE and I just don't know about it? I've done a lot of googling and if it does exist, nobody's advertising it on the interwebs. But maybe you know somebody who already started something like this informally?

My next question: if it doesn't exist, do you want to organize it with me? It could be as simple as a couple of families with a weekly playgroup; we could rotate houses/group leaders and plan a loose 'curriculum' for each week. Or, if there are enough people interested and we get ambitious, we could pool resources and see if we could pay somebody (maybe a current or former teacher from one of the existing jewish schools in portland) to do it regularly, and/or rent space for a larger group.

My son won't be 3 until next Fall, and I'm assuming this will take some time to organize. So I'm not in a big hurry, but would like to talk to other people who might be interested in getting something started in SE.

-Sarah

We are searching for a nanny or sitter for our baby girl and preschool aged-son. Our son will be in preschool part of the day, so we mostly need a caregiver for our baby. We live in NE Portland in the Piedmont neighborhood. We need part-time care but hours are flexible (daily M-F for partial days or full days for three days a week).

Please email sheila@chrislhurtt.com if you have a recommendation or are interested.

And if you are or know Emily, the woman who cared for our son Aidan one evening two summers ago at Stef and Mikki's house (and snuggled him to sleep), we would love to find you!!!

Trillium Preschool Open House for 2010-11 school year

Come learn about Trillium Preschool for the 2010-11 school year. Trillium Preschool is located in Northeast Portland at the corner of Killingsworth and Interstate.  We are housed in Trillium Charter School and are located on the Max line.

Our Philosophy

We are inspired by the Reggio Emilia approach to early childhood education.  We listen, watch and ask provocative questions to invite the child’s understanding of world to the surface. We give the children an opportunity to revisit, reflect and interpret their understandings of the world through play, art, dialogue and relationships with others. We work to makes their learning visible to their parents and other adults as we document the depth of the children’s work.  We listen closely to the children and devise  means for further thought and action.  The discoveries and questions of children are the springboard for more in depth investigations of their ideas in collaborative projects to be shared with other children, parents and at times the greater community.

We believe children are strong, competent, inventive and full of ideas to explore.  The curiosity of children makes them question and research the reasons of all that surrounds them.  Their learning and understanding becomes visible through many symbolic languages such as paint, dance, building and sculpture. We believe that childhood is a precious time that can be enhanced through thoughtful engagement.

Open Houses

We will have 3 Open House sessions for prospective families for the 2010-11 school year.  The content will be the same each session.

Looking for a nanny share in NE Portland

We are looking to join an existing NE Portland nanny situation. We would love to find a family who has a great nanny that they are using full time who would be interested in having us share w/ them 3 to 4 days a week. We would be happy to bring our son to your house and to pay an hourly, daily or weekly rate for him to be there which could help reduce your cost overall.

I'll be returning to work in mid-February and would love for our son to join a nanny share then. He'll be 4 months old.

If this might work for you and your nanny please let us know. We live in NE Hollywood and would love to find a family close by.

Thanks so much!

Looking for another child to form a nannyshare!

We have an 18-month-old daughter and a wonderful nanny.  We all agree our child may be getting a bit restless at home with the nanny each day with no other little people companions.  We've had our Nanny (Nicole)  for over a year and love her. We're not ready to let go of her and put our daughter in daycare.  Adding another child seems like the next step.

We have care worked out for the other days and so our needs for a nanny are only two days per week. Contact me if you're interested in sharing our nanny two days per week.  Ideally, half the time the nanny would be in our house with the two children and the other half, at your house, but we're open to suggestions.  If you need more days, it's possible you could work out for another day with our nanny on your own.

Call or drop me an email for more details.

Awesome Birthday

We just had an awesome birthday party for our 4 year old at The Playground Gym. It was the most relaxing kid's party that I have hosted/attended. The instructor lead the children through obstacle courses and fun activities while the parents got to know each other. The place is brand new and heavily padded; super clean and safe. The ages for our party ranges from 2-8 years old and they all had a great time  I highly recommend it!

Babysitter/Nanny for the Holidays or on Occasion

Do you need an occasional babysitter for a night out, holiday parties, holiday shopping, or just a day or night for yourself?

Are you looking for a fun, caring, reliable babysitter? Someone who will sing silly songs to your baby, blow bubbles with your toddler, or do holiday craft projects with your preschool aged child?

 A bit about me:
I am the mother of an elementary aged child, whom I will not be bringing with me. I was a Girl Scout leader for 3 years, so I am full of silly songs and fun craft projects.  I am currently a nanny part-time for 2 fantastic infants, but I am looking to do occasional babysitting for this holiday season and beyond.

I have a safe and insured vehicle, so I have reliable transportation to work and to take your young one on fun outings. I am well educated and have a master's degree.  I have a clear criminal background history and am more than willing to show you a copy of my criminal background check.   I have excellent references from all of the familes that I've worked with since moving to Portland.  I love pets and have no animal allergies.

As for my general childrearing philosophy, I tend to pull my beliefs from multiple sources, especially attachment parenting and Montessori. I believe in soothing crying babies and have experience with cloth diapers, feeding with breastmilk, and babywearing. For toddlers and older children, I believe in learning while playing, silliness, and redirection if needed.  I greatly enjoy getting out of the house with children, even if it's just for a walk around the neighborhood.  I love to go on outings to coffee shops (Urban Grind is my new favorite find to take babies and toddlers), OMSI, the Zoo, story time, baby gym, indoor park, etc.

If you have any questions or would like to discuss things further, please feel free to contact me. Thank you!

The Art of Children

Inside every child is a pop-up book.  You know the kind, the art realistically jumping off the page, challenging the child to be ambidextrous when if fact they can barely feed themselves with out becoming a finger-painted project in jelly.

These books bring to life a three-dimensional world of delightfully scary bugs, Alice in Wonderland, Dr. Suess or pop-up dinosaurs.  While these are wonderful books not necessarily designed to be left in the hands of young children, they often open a world of delight for both the reader and the read to.

David Carter moves this world a little closer to something beyond art and quite possibly closer to the way children really are.  Even as their imaginations are stimulated by the idea of pictures literally popping from the pages, Mr. Carter’s books offer something closer to the child in your care.  Like his books, your child is also nonrepresentational art.

They are thought provoking (although you might call it worrying).  They are capable of creating a three dimensional world (although you might be concerned about their propensity to be folded, spindled on mutilated by those discoveries).  Theirs is a romp through life that is just beginning (although you think about where it might lead as they travel barefoot down an uncharted path).

Carter’s latest book, which I stumbled across the other day at Barnes & Noble offers not only a firework type display, complete with noises, but it builds in intensity with each fragile turn of the page until the grand finale.  When children are left to be children, when they are allowed the time to grow and explore, learn about the space around them, the children they play with and the world that you know is ahead of them, each step is a turn of the page.  They seem to slip off the easel and form a small adult all on their own.

And like all good art, this is done slowly, in steps that inspire, in moments that are unhurried and peaceful.  I can offer your child that sort of place.  It is a small group interaction that allows them the ability to grow at their own pace, a slower pace that finds each day another page in their own personal pop-up book.  They are colors jumping off the page.

I offer all of the wonderful things you will find other daycares that post here do.  But often, it is just a little something more that will be the difference in your child’s life.  It is the comfort of knowing that you can be as fast or as slow as you like in your work-a-day life while your child is moving at their own pace through their day.  Each day is their own personal art exhibit.

If you think your child might enjoy a chance to be part of my small group, please drop me a line or visit the site.  I have one opening (this is a full-time spot).  You should also note that I am close-in to downtown and located near MAX on fareless square.

I look forward to meeting with you and your child.

Excellent, caring nanny available (Sellwood/SE Portland)

Hello mamas!

I am a nanny with ten years' experience available for childcare work in your home. I am a full-time student at PCC working towards an acupuncture degree. I am mostly available for evening babysitting work, but I am also available for some weekdays and weekends. I live in Sellwood and would love to find work in my area or in SE Portland.

I am caring and gentle and emphasize creative play and outdoor activities over TV and computer games. I am very responsible and trustworthy and have references. I speak Spanish fluently and like to engage the kids in music. I have been an ESL and reading tutor and can help kids with homework. I am very good with infants and newborns and am currently certified in Infant and Child First Aid and CPR. I am a licensed driver and have a good record but I don't own a car. I can use your car for activities involving the kids if need be.

A little more about me: I am 30 years old, I enjoy writing, music, gardening, biking, hiking, travel, dance, and yoga. I am an herbalist and have been a massage therapist. I have been a doula and have a lot of experience with newborn care, homebirth, and post-partum support. I don't smoke or drink.

I charge $11-15/hour, sliding scale, depending on what you can afford and the number of children. My general rate is $12/hour. I am also available for a nanny share, which can bring your costs down.

I look forward to hearing from you!

Sweet River Bamboo is a new Certified home based preschool in SW Portland.
Serving children from 4 months to kindergarten ready.
Our progran runs through all four seasons.
Our class is in session from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm Monday through Friday and is quite small with a 1/4 teacher/child ratio and an 8 child daily capacity.

Organic snack, and tea are served daily.
Children bring sack lunch from home to ensure they are eating according to their dietary needs.

Sweet River Bamboo draws from an eclectic mix of education philosophies and models. We strive to create a safe, nurturing environment where children can explore, create, socialize, and be inspired by the world around them.
We feel that children learn best when they are allowed to reach milestones at their own pace and are in an enriching environment where they feel secure, loved, and respected.

We are a very creative program.

Our days are filled with a balance of group activities and free play with lots of outdoor time built in.
Our curriculum is inspired by Waldorf, Montessori and Constructivist philosophies to name a few, and consists of strengthening our relationships with each other and our natural world, uninterrupted time for creative play, art and music making, baking, circle time, and story telling.

Fantastic Nanny!

In January I will be going to part-time and thus, our nanny's hours will be shortened with us.

We are in SE/Tabor. I am open to a nanny share situation (our daughter is 1) if someone close by is looking for longer hours on those days.

In addition to a possible nanny share with us, our fantastic nanny is also looking for afternoon hours M-F.

I recommend our nanny--she is smart, calm, caring, attentive, professional, and very experienced--she teaches all of us! Our daughter loves her, and that is the best possible reference.

Email me at tabor_mama@yahoo.com with questions!
