SWEET RIVER BAMBOO PRESCHOOL & NURSERY NoW ENROLLING FOR FALL! SW PDX Multnomah Village

Sweet River Bamboo is a new Certified home based preschool in SW Portland.
Serving children from 4 months to kindergarten ready.
Our progran runs through all four seasons.
Our class is in session from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm Monday through Friday and is quite small with a 1/4 teacher/child ratio and an 8 child daily capacity.

Organic snack, and tea are served daily.
Children bring sack lunch from home to ensure they are eating according to their dietary needs.

Sweet River Bamboo draws from an eclectic mix of education philosophies and models. We strive to create a safe, nurturing environment where children can explore, create, socialize, and be inspired by the world around them.
We feel that children learn best when they are allowed to reach milestones at their own pace and are in an enriching environment where they feel secure, loved, and respected.

We are a very creative program.

Our days are filled with a balance of group activities and free play with lots of outdoor time built in.
Our curriculum is inspired by Waldorf, Montessori and Constructivist philosophies to name a few, and consists of strengthening our relationships with each other and our natural world, uninterrupted time for creative play, art and music making, baking, circle time, and story telling.

Some unique qualities of this program include our exposure to different languages and cultures as the lead teacher/owner is fluent in Farsi and French and integrates cultural enrichment into our days through songs, storytelling, baking, art projects, and music making with various instruments. Body awareness will also be nurtured through fun movement practices and simple yoga poses.

Mindfulness, kindness and a natural, organic environment carry us through our days together and allow each child to blossom and thrive in their own unique ways.

mama for hire (playschool, childcare, office help, etc!)

I am a Stay-At-Home-Mama (SAHM) to 3 beautiful children, ranging in age from infant to elementary school, and I also have over 20 years of experience in childcare, education, and enrichment. I am looking for children to watch, teach, tutor, etc (At your home or mine). Cleaning, office assistance, personal assistance also available (15 years of office experience, including bookkeeping!).

All of my experience has taught me many things, amongst them:

~there is more than one way to learn, and every child deserves the best way for THEM
~"learning" does NOT mean you have to have every second of every day PLANNED- you find opportunities in children's natural curiosity
~it really DOES take a village to raise a child, so consistency and collaboration are important - for parent AND child
~you don't have to be rich to deserve top-notch care for your child

If you agree with these things, and would like your child in a montessori and waldorf - influenced environment, where the child is king (or queen), nutritional and delicious foods (allergies considered, of course!) abound, and all parenting styles and religious or spiritual beliefs are respected, please feel free to contact me. Our family utilizes attachment parenting, connected (unconditional) parenting, and NVC (non-violent communication), and eats mostly organic foods.

I am flexible on hours, rates, and would be willing to watch the children in my home or yours, depending on the hours and specifics. I do not currently drive, though my husband does, so pickup and dropoff may be possible, as well as overnights, tutoring, laundry, cleaning help, etc. I welcome your family into our tribe.

Homeschool Cooperative Preschool in SE looking for more 3 year olds

    Hello!

We are three (soon to be two) families in the SE area (by Mt. Tabor) looking for other like-minded families to participate in our preschool. The preschool has been in operation since July, and is going really well. We will be sad to lose one of our families as they are moving out of state in November, but are eager to keep our routine going by finding some other families of 3-year old (or soon to be 3-year old) children. We would like to find at least one more child, but would be very happy to have as many as a total of 6 in our program.

Thus far, we have met three days a week (T,W,R) from 9-12. The meeting location has rotated through all three houses, with the hosting parent being the "teacher."  (It's not hard: we promise!)  An additional parent has also attended every session so that there is a teacher and an assistant. Two parents and three kids can do a lot! We have gone to the river, on nature hikes, to library story-time, and to various parks. The hosting parent has always provided a simple, healthy snack for our snacktime together, and we focus on a different letter every day. So far, we have followed a very organic approach to education, but are considering beginning a packaged curriculum in the next couple of months. (Mother Goose Time and Joy School are two that we are considering.)  All three children have food allergies, so we are very sensitive to that type of need.  Children need not be completely potty-independent, though we are committed to helping each child attain that important goal.

If you would like to learn more, we'd love to have you and your child attend our school one morning.  It is definitely a time-commitment, but we have found the benefits of schooling our own children to be far worth the effort.  (And with 6 families, each family would only have to "work" 1 day a week and host 1 day every two weeks.)

Let me know if you would like more information!

Any recommendations for special needs daycare?

    Hello Mamas,

I'm hoping some of you may have recommendations for a daycare that accepts or specializes in children with special needs.  We'd especially be interested in a Montessori school, which I still remember fondly from my own childhood.

My son has Down Syndrome but is tracking closely (so far) to the later end of milestones for typical children.  We live near PSU, in SW Portland just outside of downtown.

    Would appreciate any recommendations!

    Affordable, Live-In Childcare

For 20 years, Cultural Care Au Pair's childcare and cultural exchange program has offered families flexible, live-in childcare with a unique international perspective. For only $340/week (per family, not per child), your au pair provides 45 hours of childcare and lives with you as a member of your family. Your children benefit from a one-to-one committed and caring companion and you can customize your childcare coverage according to your own schedule.

I am the Local Childcare Coordinator (LCC) for Cultural Care Au Pair. I first learned of Cultural Care from friends who had five young children and were hosting an au pair. As a witness to the great relationships, memories and cultural exchange that took place in their home, I was eager to know more about Cultural Care. What better way than to serve as a local support to host families and au pairs, and help to foster that bond?!

I look forward to welcoming more families into my group. I can be contacted at

Need PT or FT? Nanny share - SW Portland

Looking for another toddler to be in a nanny-share with us in our SW Portland (Garden Home) home. My daughter is 2 and we have had our nanny since she was 9 weeks old. We love her - but would love to have another family share her with us as it is expensive- but I love the individualized attention- as well as the reduced germs! Cost would be $10/hr + splitting taxes.

Arrangement would look like this- we currently have her M-W (9-5) in our home- we could continue this way, or if the other family wanted to have the kids at their home part time that could be arranged. I am flexible about start time if you need earlier as well. If you need the childcare on Thursday/Friday- she is currently available those days - but rate is slightly higher.

If interested, please email me at dooleyliz@gmail.com.

    Thanks,

    Liz

    The Daycare Go-Around

I have posted here numerous times about a wide variety of topics. I have offered you a look at what my specialties are, how you should approach the economic decisions surrounding daycare for your child, the hopes and dreams we have and the anxieties we face making that all important decision on where to begin your child's preschool days.

What you feel when you search for the best place to put child, perhaps for the first time might have something to do with your Americanism.  Alexis deTocqueville called it our "restless temper", the feeling that the next landing place, whether it be job or house or even church, might be better than the one we have now. We believe in new as the better option; what Juliet Schor, an economist calls fast-fashion.

While I could use this post to talk about this disposable lifestyle we have been nurtured on, new this replace the still relatively new that, I'll instead speak to what I am doing to change that go-around your brain must be on as you search for daycare.  Just as fast-food led to slow food movement, a return to finding nourishing instead of simply filling our bellies with whatever might be convenient, fast-parenting, the need to expose your child to everything as soon as possible will lead to slow-parenting, a return to letting your child be a child again.

More than simply hoping some talent will emerge as we plan our child's future, the brain function needed to get to that point is nurtured through these initial years of social interaction, learning while playing and staying with a small, family oriented environment.  Your child should be given this opportunity to grow at a pace that is often not in anyone's control. Does your child surprise you at times with what they have done?  This is them showing you that they are free thinkers, individually designed to grow at a rate of their own making.

This is why slow is best.  Given the chance, each child will have the opportunity to develop at their own pace.  This is also an opportunity for you to accustom yourself to slowing down yourself.  This stick-to-it for longer than your think is necessary now will give you excellent training for those school years ahead.  Watching your child grow up is never easy, yet each new surprise offers rewards that far exceed what you might expect.

I offer all of the safeguards many of the daycares posted here do. In addition, I also offer your child the patience to learn who they are, grow from the experience and become the child you envisioned they would be: sharp, inquisitive and adept in social settings.

If you would like to learn more about this kind of opportunity, please visit my site or drop me a note about the one opening I have left.

Nanny or Daycare NEEDED for Twins (boy/girl): in January 2010 (SE/NE)

I just had twins (boy/girl) and will be going back to work in January 2010 on Tuesday, Thursday, Friday. Essentially it is about 30hrs/week that is needed: 8:30/9am to 5:30/6pm.

    Childcare solutions for teachers?

I am wondering if anyone out there has advice about childcare solutions for parents who are also teachers. My husband is a teacher, and has the summers off as well as regular school breaks. It seems like a waste to me to pay for regular childcare through the summer when we don't need it, but it has been almost impossible to find a childcare situation that doesn't require year-round enrollment. I understand the need of daycare centers and caregivers to have secure year-round income, but it seems to me that this might be a common enough problem that others may have found a solution. Are there caregivers out there that would like to have the summer off? Are there daycare centers that cater to the specific needs of teachers with young kids? Thanks.

Child Development Community in SE for 2-year old?

We need to find a childcare community for our 2 year-old son-- and soon!  So far, we have heard great things about Portland Jewish Academy, Growing Seeds, Childroots, and Just Little People, but these places are either far away from us or are currently full. Do any of you urbanMamas love, love, love childcare communities in SE that possibly have current openings?  Or is the Portland rule of thumb that the "great" childcare centers are always full and there's no choice but to get on waiting lists?  Also, if anyone knows where we could access a current and comprehensive LIST of Portland's childcare centers, please do share!

With regard to what we're looking for, we are intrigued by communities that are guided by the RIE, Reggio Emilio, Waldorf and Montessori philosophies. And lastly, we can't do any of the co-op options.

    Thank you!

    Marsha at mlbenson001@yahoo.com

    Desperately seeking a Preschool Co-op

We have our three year old son in a preschool program that is a more traditional school setting and it isn't the best fit for any of us.  We would like to be more involved and are regretting not enrolling in a co-op preschool.  Does anyone know of any co-ops in North, NE or NW Portland which have openings?  Please email me: kellysporseen@gmail.com  Thanks!

Looking for a night nanny for 2 infants.

    Hi,

We are looking for a night nanny for 2 newborns. They are about 2 months old. My wife has to go back to work soon, and we would like for some one to watch the girls through the night.  They sleep pretty well, but one of them needs to be held quite a bit.  They sleep for about 2-2.5 hrs at a stretch.

We would like someone with impeccable credentials.  The timing is somewhat flexible (11-7 or so).  So is the salary.  We probably need help Sun-Thurs.  Days may be somewhat flexible.

We live a block from Good Sam in the NW.  We have a very comfortable home, with a computer set up, desk and full bath in the room that will be available to you.

Our family is very warm and loving.  One set of grandparents lives with us, and we would all be available to help in any emergencies, big or small.  We want the grandparents to get their rest at night, since they share in taking care of the twins, and our 21 mos old daughter in the day time hours.  We do have an amazing women/nanny for daytime care.  You could speak with her, and hopefully she has nice things to say about us as well.

This would likely be a 6-12 month position based upon the behavior of our older daughter.

Please feel free to contact me via email @ rahuldesai2@gmail.com

It would be great to find 3 or 4 mamas who would like share in order to keep costs down, but also pay the nanny a decent wage. Please email: Beth at: bfportland@gmail.com Thank you.

Looking for a part-time nanny with a flexible schedule (Mt Tabor area)

Do you have a nanny that you can't give full time hours to? Are you a nanny looking to increase the number of hours working, but don't want a strict 9-5 schedule?

We are looking for temporary help now and consistent scheduled help beginning Nov 13th for our infant son (6weeks old now). We are looking for immediate help 2-4 times a week for 3-4 hours a day. Starting in November, we would be looking for care from 6:30am - 10:30am every third day of the week to cover the overlap in our work schedules. (I.e. one week dad gets off work at 8am Mon, mom goes in to work 7am Mon -- we would want someone Monday from 6:30-10:30am, the next time we would need a nanny would be Thursday- same thing 6:30-10:30).

If it works for both parties, we could extend those hours to more days/week or more hours/day.

We are open to a nanny share, also. We prefer a nanny experienced with infants that is energetic and must like dogs (we have a very large/lazy puppy who loves people and his new little brother, but he is 100lb of ham)!

Please email with a good time to meet and with some background information about you.

Easy to Love - Peninsula Children's Center: N/NE infant - preschool childcare

Right near Interstate and Alberta, Peninsula Children's Center is a real GEM!  Integrated, affordable, great teachers, etc.

I have a toddler and a preschooler who are both thriving there.  The Center is in a beautiful building with a fabulous outdoor play area; it is a renovated elementary school.  It is a real integrated group which is invaluable.  These folks do amazing work providing affordable childcare with a sliding scale that reflects reality for us parents who don't have extra money.  There are way cool volunteer grandmas who are beyond wonderful.

When I used to have a lot more money, I had my older kid at Growing Seeds.  I know a lot about Reggio based education; Peninsula incorporates some of it, to the extent that they can.  I honestly believe that my children get as much attention, stimulation, outdoor experiential play, fun and community as they would at a more elite childcare setting.  Yes, there are a few missing elements, basically because the teachers don't have as much planning time to pull off some of the expanded curriculum as the extra well-funded places.  Some parents may have issues with the food being not all organic.

I need to share this great resource, though I feel protective of it, I also know that the Center needs more families right now.  Here is the link to their website:  Peninsula Children's Center - Home

SWEET RIVER BAMBOO PRESCHOOL & NURSERY NOW ENROLLING FOR FALL! SW PDX

Sweet River Bamboo is a new Certified home based preschool in SW Portland.
Serving children from 4 months to kindergarten ready.
Our program starts October 19th and runs through out most of the year.

Sweet River Bamboo is a very creative program.

Our days will be filled with a balance of group activities and free play with lots of outdoor time built in.
Our curriculum is inspired by Waldorf, Montessori and Constructivist philosophies to name a few, and will consist of strengthening our relationships with each other and our natural world, uninterrupted time for creative play, art and music making, baking, circle time, and story telling.

    Looking for part time childcare

    Hello

I am looking for someone to play and take care of my five month old daughter for approximately 15hrs a week. We are new to Portland, and are still familiarizing ourselves with the area. We live in southeast, close in and are open to daycare as well. Please send any ideas or leads!

    Thanks,

    Anxiety Tolerance

I would be willing to wager that many urbanmamas visiting this site have not been in daycare when they were young,   Yet, here you are, looking for care for the very child you probably have lost sleep over since the day s/he entered your life. Yet, here you are, looking for the type of care that affords you the time to go to work and for your child, the experience of social and educational growth.

It is referred to as nurture shock by authors Po Bronson and Ashley Merryman in their new book by the same title.  They suggests that the feelings you have once you bring your youngster home, the feeling of "what have I/we done?" or better "they let me bring this home?" is completely natural.  What now? is more like it.  And once we ask that question, we begin looking for answers that may or may not be there. Bronson and Merryman don't think that many of the sources of wisdom we draw on on are the right ones.

There are plenty of other books and guides out there.  Hollywood mommies (Jenny McCarthy, really?), doctors who look at children and still others that look at parents all write hoping to offer the magic elixir of parenthood between the covers of their books.  While Bronson and Merryman look at the effects of praise and punishment (one leads to discouragement, the other induces lies) and how children develop a sense of race and future academic achievement, you are left with the decision of what to do with this precious bundle you are in charge of for the next eighteen or more years.

And as a result, we become anxious. Robin Marantz Henig, writing for the New York Times Magazine does not equate anxiousness with fear.  She believes that "fear is something right in front of you, a real an objective danger".  Anxiousness instead leaps forward, imagining something that might not even be there.  When you begin looking for daycare, you will entertain both of these emotions at different times.  And that's a good thing.

You are anxious about the kind of care a provider will offer.  You are fearful and look for tell tale signs of danger as you interview for the spot.  You are anxious, worrying about something in the far-off future will be a direct result of this very decision.  And this is all part of parenting.  You can rest assured that you are doing what any parent would do - although second born children can tell you that these emotions temper somewhat with each successive kid.

So how can I help?  The kind of care I offer gives you some relief from this anxiousness.  With an in-home, close knit group like the one I have, your child, almost immediately finds the kind of social immersion I provide educationally stimulating. They tend to blossom and grow in exciting new ways.  I am focused on nurturing this growth with activities that have been developed over the twenty-two years I have been doing this.  I relish my contribution not only to your child's well-being, but to yours as well.

I believe that if you feel good about where your child is, you will feel less anxious and as a result, be a better co-worker and after a day at the office, a better parent.  Modern life offers enough challenges; it does not need to do the same with your child.  They need the ability to be kids for just a little longer, learning while playing, interacting and socializing with a group that soon become friends.

I have one opening as we head into the fall.  And I would be willing to spend some time with you dashing those anxious fears aside, letting you know that your decision is the right one and that you can relax (as much as any working mom or dad can) and contribute to the career you have chosen.  Knowing that your child will be safe and in a enriching environment is for your benefit as well as your child's.

Stop by the site and/or drop me a line.  I would love to discuss the possibilities.

    Nanny available

    Hello Mamas and Families-

My name is Jackie and I am searching for a family in need of a loving nanny.  I am a certified teacher who is taking some time off to raise my two daughters who are 3 ½ years and 8 months old.  I have spent the last three years nannying for two different families.  The little girl I am currently caring for will be going off to preschool in January, which is when I would be available (although that date is somewhat flexible).  I am looking for a family who would need care for approximately 30 hours each week and who would be open to the idea of my two daughters coming along.  They are both very bright, sweet girls who love other children and it worked out wonderfully with both families I nannied for.

In terms of experience, I have taught Kindergarten and First Grade for 5 years, have done lots of tutoring (I am tutoring two children right now) and babysitting, and have been a nanny for the past three years for children from the ages of 1 to 9 years.  I worked part time at The Children’s Place Bookstore and was a rep for a baby sling company as well.  My life always has and always will revolve around children!

I love the outdoors and exploring nature, I love reading and singing, I love making art (my undergraduate degree was in Art History) and being crafty, and I love lots of creative play.  I especially love being silly and having fun.  My approach in raising my own daughters has been very attachment/connection oriented and I find myself to be drawn to the Waldorf philosophy as well.  I generally like to follow the child’s lead and interests, providing gentle guidance and suggestions along the way.

If you are in need of a nanny, please email me at jackielou314@yahoo.com.  I would love to meet with you and talk more about my philosophy in caring for children.  Thanks so much for reading and I look forward to hearing from you!

    Birth Center Recommendations?

    Hey All!

My partner and I are 9 weeks pregnant and looking for a great birthing center. It was a bit of a surprise and after a week or two of shock, we're really excited. I called my health insurance only to find out that prenatal/delivery care was only covered if there was an emergency. Grrrrr! So we're looking into other options. Ideally we'd like to find an ND/midwife assist us in birth at a birthing center and are hoping to get some insight from you all. We are particularly interested in the Natural Childbirth and Family Clinic and am wondering if anyone has had experience- both good and bad- with them. With Dr. Gibbons specifically? Waterbirth at the clinic?

Or any other suggestions or excited recommendation are more than welcome!

    Thank you!

    Jeny
