23 year old nanny asked to be a "wet nurse"... suggestions please?

I have been a nanny for the most amazing family for the last 2 years. They have a 3 year old and a 1 year old. I have tons of experience with young children and while the youngest was only a couple months old, the Mom would pump everyday for us and we would be set. That is what I am accustomed to doing.

Well, while I was at Sellwood park today, I was visiting with this family I used to nanny for 3-4 years ago and I met their family friends: a mom who has 4-mo old twin girls. Well, it turns out she is looking for a "wet nurse" and asked me if it is something I would be interested in. She offered $20/hour and a pump so I can start trying to induce it.I've done a lot of research and while I eat super healthy (I grow my own veggies and raise my own meat on a 1/2 acre in Mt. Tabor) and never use medications, coffee, etc... I am looking for other people's opinions regarding this offer. I am 23 years old and have never had children of my own. Though I support nursing mothers 110% (the Mom I nanny for calls herself a "lactivist"), and I would love to help a child like that, I am totally caught off guard by the offer and don't really know what to think right now!

Any suggestions? Is this common? I was born and raised here in Portland and my aunts use to nurse me, but I thought it was something of the past.

Can you please help me figure out what to think of this? Thanks! Ida.

Rising Song Preschool has Fall openings

Rising Song Preschool invites you to schedule a walk through of our school. We are happy to meet your family individually and answer your questions. Please call or e-mail to set up a visit. 503.954.3235, or risingsong@yahoo.com

Rising Song is a small Waldorf inspired, home based program in NE Portland opening Fall 2009. We offer a loving, creative environment for children ages 3-5 with the low teacher/child ratio of 1:6. At Rising Song teachers act as facilitators of play, offering gentle, nurturing guidance. In our classroom children participate in baking, gardening, painting and handwork. Songs, stories and puppet shows provide rich material for the imagination and teach about the natural world. Our school is located 1/2 block from beautiful Wilshire Park, and our large backyard garden provides opportunities for exploration and direct involvement with nature. We celebrate each season with special events for the whole family: A festival of light in the fall, a shadow puppet show in the winter and a maypole dance in the spring.

We offer both half and full days allowing families to choose from our 2 day, 3 day, or 5 day programs. Our tuition runs on a sliding scale.

We currently have openings T/Th mornings, 9-12:30, and Wednesday afternoons 2-5:30. I charge $35 per session and include organic meals and snacks. YOU SHOULD HIRE OUR NANNY!!

Our nanny has been with us since my first day back to work when our son was only 3 months old.  Having such a phenomenal caregiver made the tough transition from maternity leave to working mom much MUCH easier.  You know you've got a great nanny when your baby's face lights up the minute she walks through the door.  She is easy going, extremely loving, sweet, creative, very playful and funny (and a great cook on top of all this).  I have felt completely at ease knowing that my sweet little boy is in his own home with such a fantastic young woman during the work week.  If you are looking for an experienced, responsible, very open and honest nanny, look no further!!! She will be available starting in Oct/Nov as she helps us make the transition to daycare.  We can't recommend her highly enough, and we just can't help wanting to help her find another great match.  Thanks!! - Brette

Seeking daycare inner E/S

As luck would have it, I go back to work full time and get notice that my daycare might be closing up shop anytime soon. My daughter is a social girl so I think a center vs a nanny is a better option for her..

I have a couple places to check out, but is anyone aware of any openings for an almost 2 yr old girl ... would  love to find a place in the inner E/S (Buckman/Kerns/Sunnyside) for all day care 2-3 days a week..

We are currently enrolling for ages 3 (or almost 3 and potty trained) for a new Tues/Thurs class starting this October.

Nanny or Nannyshare NE

Hi all, I posted before and so did my lovely employer Emily that I nannied for in a nannyshare situation. My name is Nicole, I live in the Beaumont Hollywood area. I thought I had found a good situation but the hours did not work out. I am a very exp. nanny/social worker, and I am looking to nanny one full day on mondays for a fun and easy going family. I have been SO lucky with this last nannyshare situation, we all got along great. I think it is important to be specific about what I am looking for and then you will know if I am your girl. I love working with infants/toddlers. Children are my passion in working as a counselor as well for 6-18 year olds. In short, I am looking for one or two active children that I can take to OMSI, sing time at Posies, on walks, to the park, and generally be out and about with. I am not looking to only stay inside when weather permits to do all the wonderful things outside has to offer. I am very into active play with children, imagination games, and being inventive. I say all this becasue the families I have worked for before are very active and engaging with their children, and that is important to me to have the ability to help a child learn and grow. I have great references, and years of exp. plus 2 nannyshare situations that have been incredible. Again looking for mondays and may be open to hours on a morning or two. 33 years old, female, hope to hear from you soon!!

How do I teach an uncircumcised 8 year old boy the proper way to urinate?

Hi everyone, I'm an aid for a little boy who is 8 years old and has had severe bowel issues since birth.  Because of this he's in diapers and has picked up the bad habit of peeing in his diaper too even though he doesn't need to.  I've finally gotten him comfortable with using the toilet but he is not circumcised and I'm pretty sure that he doesn't really know how to pee properly because he says his parents have never showed him how to.  I'm worried that he will get an infection if he doesn't pull back his foreskin when he pees and clean himself properly afterward, but I'm not sure how to go about explaining it to him or even if this is the right way to go about it.  Any help would be greatly appreciated!  I'm 19 and I have no kids so I'm not too familiar with potty training, especially for an 8 year old who feels awkward with an aid assisting him.  Thanks for all the help!  :)

Preschool for one year olds?

I am a former teacher, now stay-at-home-mama of a 13 month old girl, opening my doors to similarly-aged little ones.  I believe other SAHM's (and dads!) deserve a break, a chance to cook, clean, work, create, or relax, for at least a few hours a week.  It has been said that the quality of care we give our children is only as good as the care we give ourselves. During your time away, I provide art activities, story and music circles, organic meals, outdoor adventures, chickens, gardening, and some social time for your little one.  I am flexible regarding the age of the child, and welcome crawlers, toddlers, wobblers, and scooters...

I currently have openings Tuesday and Thursday mornings, 9-12:30, and Wednesday afternoons 2-5:30.  I charge $35 per session, and provide an organic meal and a snack.  My home is located at the base of Mt. Tabor, on Hawthorne Blvd. @59th.

Looking for a Nanny Share in NW Nob Hill or Pearl Neighborhood

Hello,

We live in NW Nob Hill Neighborhood and would like to be part of a FT nanny share starting as early as late October for our 4 month old daughter.  Timing can be somewhat flexible.  Our friends don’t live in a location convenient for a nanny share so we hope to meet some fun new mom’s in the neighborhood and see if there’s a match.. We’re interested in either joining a family with a hired nanny or finding a family interested in going through the nanny selection process with us.  We already have a few nanny leads.

Sweet River Bamboo is a very creative program.

Our days will be filled with a balance of group activities and free play with lots of outdoor time built in.
Our curriculum is inspired by Waldorf, Montessori and Constructivist philosophies to name a few, and will consist of strengthening our relationships with each other and our natural world, uninterrupted time for creative play, art and music making, baking, circle time, and story telling.

Some unique qualities of this program include our exposure to different languages and cultures as the lead teacher/owner is fluent in Farsi and French and integrates cultural enrichment into our days through songs, storytelling, baking, art projects, and music making with various instruments. Body awareness will also be nurtured through fun movement practices and simple yoga poses.

Mindfulness, kindness and a natural, organic environment carry us through our days together and allow each child to blossom and thrive in their own unique ways.

We have excellent references to share with you and can happily put you in touch with currently enrolled families!

Well Educated, Interactive, Reliable, AP leaning - Part-time Nanny Available

Are you looking for a fun, caring, reliable part-time nanny? Someone who will sing silly songs to your baby, blow bubbles with your toddler, or do craft projects with your preschool aged child?

I am looking for a part-time nanny position to supplement my current nanny position. I do have a family that I nanny for on a very part-time basis, who has a flexible schedule and is willing to accomodate my scheduling needs with another family. I'm open to the number of hours and days needed. I'm also available for date nights or extra hours with a bit of advance notice. Location-wise, I prefer to work in North or NE Portland, I am open to other areas of Portland if we're a good fit.

A bit about me:
I am well educated and have a law degree, although I do not plan on practicing in the near future. I nannied prior to moving to Oregon and have nannied for several families since moving to Portland almost 4 years ago. I have excellent references from all of my prior and current families, which I am more than willing to share upon meeting. I have a clear criminal background history from the Oregon State Bar and the Girl Scouts (I was a Girl Scout Leader for 3 years). I have taken infant and child CPR and 1st Aid, but my certification needs to be renewed, which I plan on doing asap. I am a non-smoker as well.

I have a safe and insured vehicle, so I have reliable transportation to work and to take your young one on fun outings. I think that children (and I) do best to get out of the house daily, even if it's just for a walk around the neighborhood or to a local park. There are tons of baby/kid friendly things to do in Portland, such as outings to coffee shops (Urban Grind has great play areas for babies and toddlers), baby gym at the community centers, OMSI, the Zoo, library story times, etc. I love participating in baby/child classes and so if you're interested, I can take your child to swimming lessons, Gymboree, Music Together, etc.

As for my general childrearing philosophy, I tend to pull my beliefs from multiple sources, especially attachment parenting and Montessori. (Although I don't believe that any one philosophy is "one size fits all.") I believe in soothing crying babies and being interactive with them, and have experience with cloth diapers, feeding with breastmilk, and babywearing. For toddlers and older children, I believe in learning while playing, silliness, and redirection. Although I am flexible, I do believe that children thrive with some consistency and structure. I have experience working with babies and children with varying dietary needs (gluten-free, vegetarian, etc.)

One of the most important things for me is to have a good fit and partnership with the families that I work with. I also definately value open communication. If you have any questions or would like to discuss things further, please feel free to contact me. Also, in your email, it would be great if you could include some info about your family, scheduling needs, rate of pay, etc.

Thank you!

A Genius in the Making

There isn't a single UrbanMama (or UrbanPapa) who doesn't gaze down into their child's eyes and see a genius.  That sparkle, that twinkle, that infectious giggle surely is just a front for a brain that is working its way toward a great future.  And you promise yourself you will do everything you can to get this wonderful child there.

But how?

Scientific American reported that you may be trying too hard. In an article that appeared several years back, they suggested that "Many people assume that superior intelligence or ability is a key to success. But more than three decades of research shows that an overemphasis on intellect or talent—and the implication that such traits are innate and fixed—leaves people vulnerable to failure, fearful of challenges and unmotivated to learn."

Motivating a youngster to learn is done through play, through art, through song and dance.  It is done while they aren't paying attention to the process.  It is done by allowing them to be, first and foremost, kids.

Kids who learn with a soft structure often learn about abilities and talents they didn't know they had.   "Praising children’s innate abilities," SA suggests "reinforces this mind-set, which can also prevent young athletes or people in the workforce and even marriages from living up to their potential."  Interaction with children younger is beneficial as well.

Of the two views of intelligence the magazine reported on, my program has always leaned toward the development of a "mastery-oriented" child, done by encouraging them to try new things.  Simple things like working with clay, dancing, trying their hand at cooking, or something as simple as finding out what makes them laugh. We work in our organic garden, play in the snow, and sharing their show-and-tell.  Rather than developing a "fixed mind-set” which leads to "[m]istakes [that] crack their self-confidence because they attribute errors to a lack of ability, which they feel powerless to change", I look towards flexibility.

Instead I like to offer your child a chance to develop the kind of intelligence that "is malleable". While offering what many of the other fine daycares listed here provide, I will take your child on a growing journey, allowing them to develop in a soft structured way that suits them best.

I currently have two spots open and I would love to meet with you and your progeny. This is also a great opportunity for siblings as well.  We are close-in to downtown in NE Portland (on fareless square).

Visit the site and drop me a line.

I look forward to sharing these formative years with your youngster.

Our Wonderful Nanny is Available

Our 18-month-old daughter will be starting playschool this month, which means that our amazing nanny will be looking for a new family. Right now she watches our daughter and the boy across the street, who's 22 months, four mornings a week for a total of 12 hours. The kids adore her, and we do, too. She takes them to the park and to OMSI; she reads to them; she teaches them new words and games. She's unflappable and calm, but also incredibly active and engaged (she would never dream of plopping the kids in front of a movie, for instance.) We've felt truly, truly lucky to have her, and so will you. She's looking to care for a child or two (nannyshare possible) either four mornings a week or one full day a week, preferably near her home in Beaumont. You can reach her at eyeirish@yahoo.com; you're also welcome to contact me at emily@lightsourceconsulting.com.

Hello!

My husband and I are looking for an experienced nanny approx 20hrs/week, beginning late Oct/early Nov.  Our son will be 4-5 months at that time. We are looking for a nanny who has experience with infants, doesn't mind (prefers!) nannying in our TV-free home, is enthusiastic about reading aloud, singing aloud, frequent walks to the nearby park, is CPR/First Aid trained, is a non-smoker, and is willing to have a background check done. Ability to speak or read aloud in Spanish would also be a plus!

We live in NE Portland, close to Fremont and MLK.

(Affordable) Care needed for sweetsweet 3 month old

Hi there,

My partner and I are moving to Portland, somewhat spontaneously. We'll need care, probably around 3 to possibly 5 days a week for our awesome, mellow little girl (3 months). We're seeking nannies, a nanny share, or quality daycare with immediate openings. We are looking at houses in the N & SE Portland areas, but are not at all opposed to traveling to the right person or daycare. If you can suggest great care providers, we would so love it, being newcomers and all. And if you are a great care provider, please contact me with scheduling, rates, and bio info! Thanks so much! Be well.

Awesome Nanny Available!!!

Hello!!

I am 25 years old and have lived here in Portland for the last 7 years. I love the Pacific Northwest! I've been a full-time nanny for the last 4 years, and have been babysitting for more than 10 years. I have experience with children ages 4mo. to 8 years old. I have experience volunteering in a daycare for homeless families, tutoring pre-schoolers with Junior Kumon, and working with at-risk teenagers in Oregon Youth Conservation Core. I am currently a weekend volunteer at Doernbecher Children's hospital.

My educational experience includes courses in Family Studies, Child Psychology, Human Development and Teaching in International Schools. I recently finished my nursing pre-requisites and graduated from PSU. I have a Bachelor's of Science in Liberal Studies and a minor in Black Studies. I'm currently applying for nursing programs and plan on returning to school next summer.

My style is adaptive towards each child, because each child has his/her own special interests, personality and talents. I am familiar with the Love and Logic techniques, and try to utilize these methods within my childcare. I like to encourage spending as much time outdoors as possible, hone creative abilities as well as kids' imaginations, and try to laugh as much as humanly possible :)

I have an Oregon driver's license and my own vehicle If you are interested, please contact me for full resume/references... Thank you and I look forward to hearing from you!!

Part-Time Nanny needed or nanny-share

I live by Alberta Park, work from home and am looking for someone to help care for my 1 year old daughter on Thursday's and Friday's and possibly on Wed from 1:30-4:30 pm. Then  I have a 4 year old son who would need to be pick-up at the bus stop close by at 3:00 pm. Then right after my daughter lays down for a nap so you really would only be watching 1 child at a time.

They both love to be outdoors and there is plenty to do in the area that is walkable. Books, music, art and of course playing is also a big hit with them.

Please contact me at christina@bobnagel.com if you are interested. Thank you, Christina
