Mixed Age Kindergarten at Growing Seeds

Our Mission is to provide all students access to materials, experiences and education based on respect for the individual, each other and our environment.  We believe that all students are intelligent, creative and resourceful.

Our Education Plan is based on a belief that all students want to investigate, explore, and experience the world in which we live. Our job as teachers is to guide children to learn from the natural environment, the classroom environment,  and the emotional environment.

We believe that all children are born scientists; investigating and exploring the world around them from the time they are born. Therefore, our curriculum utilizes their natural curiosity and that innate scientific ability to become “learners” and continue to enjoy the learning process.

Children guide the curriculum with their interest in a topic, and they influence their explorations with their own thoughts, ideas and goals. The teacher guides the students beyond their current capabilities and into the next level of cognitive, physical, social and emotional ability.

All of the educational goals of the school flow through this scientific method and guided exploration.  Questions about how the universe works are answered through personal experiences (Scientific Query), through quantification (Mathematics), and through the applied knowledge of others (Literacy, History).  They can then share this new knowledge with their peers, their teachers, and their parents through symbols that represent the outcome of their explorations (Verbal/Written Communication, Art).

Please join us at our Open House  May 8th at 6:15 pm at 6505 NE MLK, Portland OR 97211. At the Open House you will have an opportunity to see the kindergarten classroom, hear more about our philosophy and ask any questions you may have.

Need a nanny for your little one?....

Hello urban Mamas,
My name is Janine, I am 26 and I moved to Portland about 6 months ago from Germany. I have been taking care of my -now 15 months old- nephew the first few months after arriving here.
I have about 3 days a week available now ( I work in a coffeeshop-partime) and would love to continue taking care of kids of any ages. I am pretty flexible time wise so feel free to ask me about any special situation you are in.
We have been enjoying going to Portland's playgroups, the OMSI, parks, the library as well as playgrounds or simply play at home.
I definitely love to explore nature and provide an inspiring, nurturing and fun environment for your little ones.
I have been taking care of children for about 10 years and bring a lot of experience with me.
I currently live in NE Portland. I don't have a car so it would be great if we could arrange a situation where public transport/ biking is possible for me.

Please feel free to email me for any questions that you might have.

Have a lovely day!

Janine

Infant Care FT and PT in SE Portland

At Little Wiz Kids we are dedicated to providing high quality care for infants and toddlers by fostering development of each child’s individuality and supporting families and community.

With both adult-guided and child-initiated activities, children are active participants in their own development.  Through uninterrupted play, observation and gentle guidance, children are provided with ample opportunities to explore, touch, taste, discover and interact with the world around them at their own unique pace.

Our goal is to give your child the chance to engage in quality learning experiences that foster growth in the basic areas of development.

  • Cognitive Development-  Providing uninterrupted play with open ended materials such as dramatic play, blocks and open art activities, children are learning to ask questions, use their imaginations, learn problem solving skills and are developing a sense of accomplishment within themselves because there is no right or wrong answer, thus opening up a world of possibilities.

  • Social/Emotional Development- We know each child has special gifts and qualities to share and for us to learn from, and by providing a safe and positive environment, one that can foster communication and cooperation between the children, we are building the foundation for a child to gain the skills to problem solve, negotiate and develop compassion and empathy towards others.  With a stable environment, as well as loving and compassionate relationships with adults, children learn trust and gain self confidence.

  •  Physical Development- Whether it be large or fine motor skills, children are constantly developing physically with everything they do.  It may be through outdoor play where they can run, jump, climb or ride bikes.  Or maybe it is through songs, dancing, creative movement, cutting paper or painting a picture.  We provide many opportunities for children to investigate and learn about how to manipulate and strengthen their bodies through play.

We serve children ages 6 weeks to 2 1/2 years. Call us to schedule a tour and see what we offer!  We currently have spots available for FT and PT infants.

The Little Cottage Preschool & Childcare Has Openings and Scholarships!

With current openings in our infant and preschool groups (sorry, toddler group is full), we are The Little Cottage.

Located in downtown Beaverton on a quiet residential street, you will find the Little Cottage. The Preschool that looks like a house, feels like a home and prepares children for the world around them... Here, the children have the opportunity to participate in gardening and problem solving. They learn how to navigate their ABC's, 123's and peer relationships. We encourage children to rely on their strengths and build on their limitations. And, because we care about children inside and out, we make sure that what we feed them is also just as enriching and nourishing as the outside environment that we create for them. The snacks and meals that we provide are planned with little growing bodies in mind. We choose organic products whenever possible and try to foster healthy choices. Additionally, due to our commitment to the environment and our daily practices, we have been qualified as an Eco-Healthy Childcare site by the Oregon Environmental Council.

We are also supported by a generous grant that enables us to offer:

Scholarships

We offer private scholarships for working families based on the following income guidelines:

Family Size                   70% Median Income

2     $43,450/year          6     $63,000/year

3     $48,900/year          7    $67,350/year

4     $54,300/year         8     $71,700/year

5     $58,650/year

Parents who participate in our scholarship program are expected to pay no more than 10% of their monthly income. Ex.: A qualifying family that makes $2,000 per month would have a co-pay of no more than $200 no matter how many children or their ages.

Give us a call at: 503-488-5835 to schedule an appointment!

Oregon's Employment Related Child-Care Assistance

Hi Fellow Urban Mamas,

I read recently the April 19th post about two incomes and trouble affording child-care.  Well that is me and I wanted to alert you and all mamas in Oregon abut some significantly troubling changing in Oregon's DHS child-care assistance program.

I don't know if you are aware of recent changes within DHS and the Employment Related Day Care, but as of April, they have determined that those who are self-employed yet need child-care assistance are no longer eligible for child-care assistance (ERDC). This is very upsetting and troubling to me. I am a mother of two small children (3.5 and 1.5) who works part-time for low wages and my husband owns a small business in downtown Portland.

As many Oregonians do, we have trouble paying the bills and therefore I need to work. However, the child-care costs are too high for me to pay on my own.  We are in a bind---I need to work to pay the bills and therefore need child-care, which is expensive, however, if I do not work and therefore do not have childcare expenses, then we can't live in our home.  Do you see the problem?

My husband has been working very hard to get his business on stable ground so that he can take home a larger salary.  We employ 15 people, which is great for Oregon!, but the overhead expenses of running a business are very high and therefore my husband's income is very unstable.  I feel like we are being punished for being entrepreneurs and stimulating Oregon's economy.  If my husband worked for another company and therefore was not providing jobs in this difficult economy, we would be eligible for ERDC.  Where is the sense is that?

I think the DHS people believe self-employed persons have flexibility with their schedule and therefore when I am working, my husband can take care of the kids.  This is not the case.  He needs to be on-site during the day, dealing with banks, vendors, staff, etc.

As mother's here in Portland, I think we can change this policy!  Can you please contact DHS and your state legislator and urge them to change this very ill-though-out policy? The number for the DHS office is 1-503-945-6247.  You can find your state legislator's e-mail through this website:   http://www.leg.state.or.us/findlegsltr/

Thank you very much,

Harmony Montessori School enrolling now for fall 2009

Harmony Montessori School offers a joyful learning environment and a holistic approach to early education based on the Montessori method.   Within the carefully prepared environments of our classrooms, we trust and encourage each child to grow and learn according to his or her unique timetable and interests. In the words of Dr. Montessori, our commitment is always to "follow the child."

Discovery

Preschool and kindergarten children possess absorbent minds and unmatched sensitivities that enable them to learn more easily and efficiently than at any other time of life. Our school offers an environment rich in choices, experiences, and opportunities for self-discovery. Carefully selected materials invite children to exercise their senses, develop large and small motor skills, deepen their concentration, and explore math, written language, geography, and science, as well as music and the creative arts.

Daily Schedule

Our daily morning program in each class consists of a balance of individual work time, which is the heart of Montessori education; group time for stories, music, sharing, and brief lessons; and outside play.

Our core schedule is a three-hour class from 9:00 am to noon. We also offer a popular four-hour option for children which includes the lunch hour; they bring a lunch from home, and enjoy the experience of eating together and additional playing with their friends.

The afternoon “Extended-Day” schedule provides a balance of the full, mixed-age class in the mornings, and a second work period with a smaller group of older peers in the afternoons from 1:00 to 3:00.   The kindergartners (age 5 by September 1) all enroll for this longer day, and they have special, occasional field trips out into nature or special outings in the city.

Harmony is open from 7:30 am to 5:30 pm, and we provide a high-quality all-day Montessori program for all the children in our care.  Our commitment is to live by Montessori principles all day without "before- or after-care" of lesser quality.

Location and Facilities

Our classrooms are located in the education wing of a church, at the corner of SE 139th and Mill in east Portland, within a few miles of I 205.  We have three unique classrooms.  A spacious fellowship hall is available for winter play in inclement weather. Outdoors we have a unique Children's Garden, created and maintained by parents and children, as well as a huge, fenced, equipped playground.

Enrollment

If interested in learning more about our school, please make an appointment to visit. Montessori schools all share a common philosophy and materials, but each school is unique. First-hand observation is invaluable in making a decision about the right school for your child.  Please see the enclosed insert for enrollment and tuition details.

Our website offers more information about Harmony.

We welcome racial, cultural, and religious diversity and families of every composition.

Mama to one; Nanny to yours?

My baby loves kids, and so do I.  My girl is now a year old, and I am looking to find a family with one or two older children (3 – 10?), preferably in the NE, who need summer-time care.  We live just a few blocks from Alberta Park, and would be happy to base our days here, or at yours, or a combination.  I am a joyful, involved mom practicing attachment parenting, with lots of experience with all kinds of kids.  I am a yoga teacher in the neighborhood, read at Vernon school as a volunteer, keep chickens, grow food, draw and take pictures, cook, bake and craft.  We have a bike with a Burley and baby seat as well as a car.  I am happy to do the regular stuff (zoo, etc) but would rather do free-form free stuff, like wood walks, park hunts, fountain baths, ant watching, art making, fort building, libraries and gardening.  I’d also be happy to shuttle to camps or classes, as need be.  I hope to find a family (or two) who share my view of childhood as a time of exploration, inspiration, and fun.  Having a good match is more important to me than the details: we are open to part or full time, and I am flexible on pay.   I have let my CPR lapse by a year, but would be happy to re-up if you’d like.

Creative Nanny Available

I am a 32 year old, creative, college educated nanny looking for a part-time position starting mid June. I currently work with two families, but one of my jobs is ending for the summer, and I'm open to finding a summer position or a more permanent one. I am CPR/first aid certified for infants, children and adults. I am looking for a family or a nanny share situation with 1-3 kids. I have been a nanny/childcare provider for the past 3 years, and I have 4+years of additional baby-sitting experience. I have experience with children from ages 3 months to 9 years. I am familiar with and practice many elements of attachment parenting and positive discipline, and I have experience with cloth-diapering and breast fed infants. I love to take kids to the library, read books together, play games, make art, and allow children to explore themselves through imaginative play. I provide a safe and nurturing environment for kids to be themselves. I get around by bike, do not have a car, and I like to use the bus to take kids to OMSI, farmer's markets, the zoo, parks, picnics, and gardens.

I identify as queer and transgendered, and I am seeking a family who is queer and trans-friendly. My rates start at $12/hr. for one child, and I am open to doing a nanny share as well. I live in SE but I am open to working in other areas as well. I hope to hear from you soon!

Infant Childcare, Inner SE

I live in the Brooklyn neighborhood (SE 9th Ave, south of Powell), and am struggling to find an ideal daycare situation.  I'm due in mid-July, and will need at least part-time care starting late September/early October.  I work from home, so would prefer to bring the baby somewhere else nearby (otherwise I know I won't be able to focus!).  I'd be interested in nanny-sharing and in-home daycare.  I've visited CCLC (near 25th and Holgate)--it's a bit expensive, not in walking distance, and just overall not exactly what I had in mind.  I can't find anything else nearby.  Does anyone have any advice and/or interest in doing a nanny-share?

Creative, Fun, Down to Earth Nanny

Dear Mamas of Portland,

I am a professional nanny and I am currently working as a teacher at a Waldorf Nursery School. I am looking for a family who shares my philosophy of positive reinforcement while providing a healthy and loving environment.

For the past five years I have worked in childcare as a mentor, a teacher, and most importantly a friend. I have gotten to experience seeing  different children grow more into who they are. Nothing is more beautiful than that. I have found my passion working with children and I want to live through that by working as a nanny.

I value a child's awareness for I watch them model the action of "be here now." A child is able to enjoy the beauty of what is right in front of them. Whether its the soft ball that they can feel ever inch of or the bubbles in the sky that they spend forever gazing at. Their eagerness to learn and evolve is breathtaking and I would love to be there to support.

I am currently looking to care for families starting May 1st. I would love to talk with you more regarding my experience and details about your family.

You may email me at Lanalackeythe2nd@aol.comor it would be wonderful to call me at 858 692 9445. I am available to chat on the phone any time. Feel free to call!

Best Wishes,

Lana Lackey

Play group for 2-3 year olds...and have your toddler learn some Spanish too.

We're seeking a few toddlers, aged 2-3, to form a play group. I currently have a 2-year old daughter who loves being around other kids and would welcome the opportunity to play with others. This would be a play group where you could drop off your child for 3-4 hours to run errands, have brunch with a friend, spend time with your other kids, or do whatever you please. In the meantime, your child would have the chance to play with others and learn some Spanish.

We have a wonderful nanny who would facilitate the play group. She is a native Spanish speaker and currently speaks to my daughter in Spanish. She can, however, speak fluent English, so should your child need comforting or help in English, she can easily switch. We have been with this nanny in a nanny-share situation for nearly a year and couldn't be happier. She is terrific with toddlers and has had over 5 years of experience taking care of multiple children at once. She does all sorts of activities with kids and has a terrific knack for dealing with the whims of toddlers. She came to us with the highest recommendations, and we certainly would echo those compliments.

The play group would be on Monday and/or Wednesday mornings for 3-4 hours (Thursday may also be possible starting mid-June). As for location, we can rotate houses or have it at a designated house if that is preferred by the group. We live in Northeast Portland, so ideally it would be in that part of town. The charge would be $5.50/hour/kid. We could begin as soon as desired.

If you're interested or have more questions, feel free to email me at adechet@gmail.com

Looking for quality infant care in SE and/or close to SW First and Arthur

Hello,

I am looking for quality affordable care in the SE area or around the west side of the Ross Island bridge. My daughter is due May 4th and I will be looking for care starting around the end of June when I have to go back to work.  I have found an in home provider I would love to send my daughter too, but she is not sure if she will have room, so I need to find another option.

I am leery of an in home provider unless it is by referral and they must be registered with the state.  I want someone who promotes attachment parenting, accepts cloth diapers and supports breast feeding as well as has an open door policy which means parents can come by anytime to spend time with their child or breast feed, etc.  (I realize nap time is not a good time to interrupt the daily routine).

If anyone has any recommendations, I would love to hear from you. I have checked out a couple of centers and one I really like, the other not so much not to mention it is way out of my price range.

Thanks for the help!!

Looking for daycare/nanny two half days a week for my 2 year old girl.

Hi,

I am searching for a daycare option or nanny share two days a week, Tuesday and Thursday.  I have a very active, wonderful little girl who will be two in May.  She has just recently become potty trained and thrives interacting with other toddlers.  I am self-employed, and as my business grows I need some help!!!  Currently, I need care for her from around 1-5ish.  Ideally, I would prefer her to be with other toddlers, although I am struggling with finding care for her for such short hours only two days a week.  Any advice, recommendations, thoroughly welcome!  I can be reached via email at zimmer.jennifer@gmail.com or at 503.867.4212.  We live in the Concordia neighborhood and will travel, although the NE is preferable.

Thanks everyone and have a joyous day,

Jennifer

NE nanny share

Hi! My husband and I are expecting our first, a girl, in June and are beginning to search for a the perfect nanny AND a family with whom to nanny share starting in August.  We'll need care for up to five hours up to five days a week and have a somewhat flexible schedule.  We'd like to offer our beautiful, remodeled home for the 'site' but are open to a variety of arrangements with the right family.  We are in our early 30s, successful, and hope to raise our daughter in a natural home.  We look quite forward to meeting the perfect nanny and family! Interested as a nanny or family? email amymsons@hotmail.com and we'll set up a time to meet. Thanks!

Child care exchange? I'll watch yours and you watch mine

Starting in August 2009, I will need child care two days per week. I was wondering if there is another family in Portland who will also need child care two days per week? My schedule is flexible, and I think I can choose any two days of the week to work. While I am working, you can watch my son, who will be about 7+ months old then, and yours. Then, on the days you are working, I can watch your child plus my son. Email me - nataliebennon at msn.com - if you are interested. Then we can figure out if it would work logistically, and if so, we can meet and see if we are a good fit in terms of personality. I am in SE portland, near 35th and Hawthorne.

Seeking Childcare for infant, Beaverton, October 2009

I am due to have a baby at the end of June. I will be taking 4 months of leave and returning to work full-time in mid to late October 2009. I want to make sure I have child care set up LONG before that time because it is so diffcult to find good care for an infant. I don't like daycare centers for infants, but I am also not particularly comfortable with an in-home provider without reliable and strong references. Any suggestions of in-home providers in the Beaverton area? Hillsboro is an option too - we're right on the line of the two cities. I'm also open to a SAHM with a child 2 or younger who is interested in having a playmate for her child while also making some additional income for her family. Things that are important to me: high quality care, low ratio, natural/organic food (once eating solids), loving, learning environment, and no to minimal TV. Any and all suggestions welcome!! I need help!! Thanks!
