On Wednesday, May 28, the National Wildlife Federation organized and held a press conference to
pressure Senator Gordon Smith to vote YES on the Climate Security Act (CSA). We had a great showing of parents and kids at the event: 8 parents and
11 kids attended! The two 2'x3' posters were delivered to our
senators' offices, one thanking Senator Wyden for sponsoring the bill,
the other asking Senator Smith to please support the bill, and both
were filled with handprints of kids who weren't able to make it to the
event. OPB ran a news story the next morning, and the Oregonian ran an editorial about the legislation in the Sunday paper (6.1.08).
The CSA will go to the floor of the U.S. Senate this coming week! This is the strongest piece of legislation on climate change that has ever been before congress, and includes a cap & trade provision that will be the framework for regulating carbon emissions moving into the future.
Didn't make it to the event? No worries, you can still participate! Call Senator Smith (202.224.3753) and ask him to "please vote yes on the Climate Security Act." Also, write a letter to the Oregonian telling them how important solving global warming is to our children's future and that the CSA is a critical and overdue first step.

After all that, it died in the Senate. Big bummer: http://www.nytimes.com/2008/06/07/washington/07climate.html?ex=1370577600&en=b14db6a2211e58f1&ei=5124&partner=permalink&exprod=permalink
