So it's not Mother's Day anymore and I'm writing about Mother's Day. But that, mamas, is the story of my life. Especially these days! In my own defense, my mother has been visiting from out-of-town and leaves tomorrow, so in some way it is still Mother's Day at our house (and the longer it lasts the better, is my take). Now that we've got that cleared up.
A woman I met recently through our Parents for Paid Leave group - its founder, actually - read us the 1870 Mother's Day Proclamation at our Saturday meeting. Several pieces of it are below - the ones that spoke most to me about women uniting to work together for change - peace, at that time:
Arise then...women of this day!
Arise, all women who have hearts! We, the women of one country,
Will be too tender of those of another countryIn the name of womanhood and humanity, I earnestly ask
That a general congress of women without limit of nationality,
May be appointed and held at someplace deemed most convenient
And the earliest period consistent with its objects,
To promote the alliance of the different nationalities,
The amicable settlement of international questions,
The great and general interests of peace.
Julia Ward Howe's words remind me how strong we can be together, how we have so many common goals. It also makes me think of an excellent local magazine that focuses on women from around the world, and its blog, which seeks to connect them and their stories to each other and those ready to listen and learn. One wonderful thing about World Pulse and PulseWire is their focus on telling and sharing stories and experiences, reporting people and places. While advocacy and assistance are so often needed and requested, this impressive resource has a different mission to "connect women to transform our world." Like wow, mamas. Check out its Dia de la Madre piece celebrating women from around the globe. As one of the mamas says:
I want to tell mothers in the US to raise their kids to look to other worlds beyond their own. They must teach their children that there are other kids just like them and that we are all connected."
I'm inspired. You?

Hear (and see!) the proclamation on You Tube - great wigs! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BnwEK_8YxTw
