I love that there's an organization called A Better Balance that works solely to improve this whole work-family balance conundrum. They describe themselves this way:
A Better Balance is a legal advocacy organization dedicated to empowering individuals to meet the conflicting demands of work and family without sacrificing their economic security. We are engaging government and the private sector to bring about systemic change. Since 2005, we have been working to help people across the economic spectrum care for their families without losing their jobs or suffering other discrimination because of their family responsibilities. Workers should not have to face impossible choices between earning a paycheck and caring for their loved ones.
Like, I couldn't have said it better myself, mamas. So when they come calling, I wanna help. And they are calling. They are asking people who work a reduced schedule to complete a questionnaire about their experiences, which they describe like this:
One solution to the challenge of meeting work and family responsibilities is working fewer hours than a conventional full-time work week for your occupation. It might be fewer hours or days a week, a job-sharing arrangement, or periods of time off during the year.
We'd like to hear from people who are working a reduced hours schedule. What are the specifics of your work arrangement? What are the pros and cons? Are there changes - in the workplace, culture, or public policies - that would make part-time work a realistic option for people who might want it?
Please take a few minutes to tell us about your experience arranging and working less than full-time by completing our questionnaire.
Go ahead, help them! Register quickly on their site, click the "survey" button on the top and it'll take about 5-8 minutes to answer the questions. Anything to help an organization working hard to make part-time work a real option for those of us who see that as a key to a more balanced life that includes more time with our children. I am tired of the system standing between me and the parenting lifestyle I'd like to create. Thanks to folks like these, maybe we can remove this barrier between working parents and time with our children.
