Like to talk? Really think an issue through? Does the idea of considering a topic without an agenda appeal to you? Check out the City Club of Portland's upcoming discussion group, Children at the Center: Envisioning Schools, Families & Communities that Serve our Youth. If you're looking for action, this ain't it. But it presents an interesting opportunity to really think about 'key questions in education and human development.' And, importantly, to connect with others in the Portland area that are thinking about, researching and working on issues related to children and how they can thrive.
Here's how City Club describes this "ag'ora":
A series of six community dialogues to explore key questions in education and human development. The series is intended to generate fresh and imaginative thinking about educating and nurturing our youngest citizens – from birth through adolescence – in schools, families and communities. Key questions guiding the discussions will include the following:
- What is the nature of the child and what do children need in order to develop, learn and thrive?
- What is the function of the arts and creativity in human development and learning?
- What are the connections between physical and social/cultural environments and learning?
Where & When: Six Tuesday evenings from January 8 to Feb 5, 2008, 5:30-8:30 PM @ AIA Portland's new offices on 403 NW 11th Ave.
To Register (or ask questions): Call the series facilitator, Ba Luvmour, at (503) 287-1785
I'll admit to being very curious, but know I'm just a wee bit looped to think I can escape my life (such as it is!) for 3+ hours every Tuesday evening (after a full day of work, kids in school) for 6 weeks. In fact, mamas, now that I spell it out, it's a pretty clear no. But I'd sure love to learn about the discussions, hear who's there. If you sign up ($35), will you tell us about it???
