For the mamas among us with kids in PPS, the acronym CPPS is probably no mystery. For those of with preschoolers, Community & Parents for Public Schools is a whole new thing. Here's how they describe the organization:
We are the Portland chapter of Parents for Public Schools (http://www.parents4publicschools.com), part of a nationwide network of grassroots organizations focused on increasing parent, family and community involvement in public education. Launched in January of 1999, as a chapter of Parents for Public Schools, we are part of the only organization nationally that actively recruits parents to public schools, and advocates for parents taking a role in decision-making, school improvement, and accountability
And its 2.08 Parent Leadership Conference:
The 2008 PLC will focus on examining stories of successes (and some failures) in developing strategies to increase parent involvement at the building level, in a variety of PPS schools. The goal of each workshop will be to develop a series of tactics and strategies that you can take back to your building and incorporate into your school’s Parent Involvement Plan (mandatory as of 2008 for each school).
If you want to stay in the loop as the conference takes shape, sign up for the PLC-News e-mail list. Any mamas have experience with CPPS? Attended a Parent Leadership Conference in years past? Worth it? Other ways to get involved in PPS that other mamas might want to check out?
